Hello. I have recently bought a relatively new computer and am havin
issues with installed programs that I'm guessing might be Vista related
Several programs do not keep their default settings. For instance, i
Winzip I select to not include the program in the system tray, but ever
time I reboot it shows up in the system tray (despite changing th
setting each time). I have an FTP program that doesn't save the FT
accounts I set up. I have many other programs that revert back t
first-use settings as well, despite repeatedly making changes (lik
selecting to not receive pop-up hints, setting defaults, etc)

I've had Vista on another computer before and never experienced thi
problem with any of the afflicted programs. Any ideas as to what migh
be going on

Thanks in advance for the help

Joh

Perhaps if you installed the program as "Admin" user but are running as
another "User" it's something to do with permissions, although I guess
I'd expect some kind of warning from the system about that. Are you
using the default locations for this software? I guess is not then maybe
the software is looking in the wrong place (or saving in the wrong place).

Do you have anything running that "Protects" the system from changes,
something like Antivirus or Antispyware that you were not using before?
Some of their "Registry Protection" may put things back when they get
changed and it's possible something is doing this and not warning /
asking about doing so. Maybe if you can list differences between the old
and new setups someone here will spot the problem right away...

Sounds like your programs are not Vista compatible. You might want to try
running them in compatibility mode.

Are you running the apps using an administrator account? If so, you
might find that the apps retain their settings when you "run as
administrator". I've actually used this as a "feature" with some apps I
use -- I can set the preferences "as administrator", and when I run the
app normally, any changes I make are forgotten when I exit. I actually
kind of like it (and was a bit sorry to see it go when one app issued an
update!).

try creating another admin account and then it will keep settings. often
times the default factory account doesn't keep customizations for some
reason.
