New Vista Home Premium system that has now stopped allowing connections to
update either Windows, Defender or time requests via Microsoft servers.
System is connected via router that allows me Internet access via DSL. I can
update time using nist server and MS web pages such as this one but will
return an error code of 0x800c0019 for both Windows updates and Defender
updates.

Networked PC running Win-XP has no issues with updates

Event Log reflects successful updates on 10-16 but failures thereafter...

Any insights/assistance/guidance appreciated. I've tried the KB guidance for
checking IE7.0 connections to auto detect settings (no luck); I've set a
proxy to the I of the router (no luck) and at wits end. It appears there is a
setting in Vista that is not picking up the same settings that my AOL browser
is since its allowing me access to this discussion group...

Unfortunately - no help. I followed MS's tech e-mailed guidance of
Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder (See Below) w/o success.

I then tried your URL linked guidance for the home user Manual steps. I also
went into services and had to stop McAfee services that were still running
even though I had disabled them all. In step 6, I could not do a "proxycfg
-d" as it would not run even in adminstrator mode or at c:\

At this point, I'm waiting for the MS tech to respond to the screen shots
and Sys Info I sent to him...

Anyone else have any ideas short of re-installing Vista and all 3rd-party
software? I'll take a look at the Method 2 for being behind a proxy server
but will probably just wait for the MS tech to respond with alternatives at
this point...

==========================================
This issue may occur if the Windows Update Software distribution folder has
been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder.
Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the
Windows Update site.
1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".
4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ"
(without the quotes) and press Enter.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was
successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it
fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any
error messages you may have received when it failed.

5. Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%"
(without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the
quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net
start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the
Windows Updates service.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was
successfully started. However, if it fails, please let me know before
performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have
received when it failed.

Then please refer to the following steps to update the system and test the
issue again.
1. Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in “Windows
Update” (without the quotes) and press Enter.
2. Then the Windows Update window will be opened, please click “Check for
updates” button to test the issue.
If any error was encountered, please help me capture a screenshot so that I
can get an accurate impression of the issue.

FYI-
After a delayed e-mail correspondence with a MS Tech (must have been off
Sunday & Monday..) my screen shots of my Linksys router showing Auto MTU and
a setting of 1500 MTU alerted the MS Tech that it may be a MTU conflict.

He had me reset the router to a fixed MTU of 1480 - this alone did not
resolve the issue. I then connected the PC directly to the DSL modem but had
same error issue. I cleared the grayed out Auto Configuration Script in IE7
Connections and rechecked Auto Detect Settings; flushed the DNS cache
(ipconfig /flushdns in command prompt and rest the Proxy Cache -- CMD Prompt
as Adminstrator -- netsh winhttp reset proxy)

After this, I now had an update error of code 80072EE2 - IE7 help indicates
to add MS update URLs to trusted sites -- which they had already been
entered. I then thought to check the DSL modem settings and it showed the
Ethernet connection as 1500 MTU but it had no way to reset it.

Closing the DSL modem connection, I was then able to connect and perform an
Update. Since then, I've been able to re-connect via the router and re-enable
the McAfee Firewall/virsu etc and still maintain update capabilities... I can
only assume that resetting the router MTU to 1480, opening/closing the DSL
modem settings and flushing the DNS cache/resetting the proxy somehow did the
trick...
