Vista; Failure to read S.M.A.R.T. temperatures

I recently upgraded to Vista and noticed utilities like SpeedFan and
nVidia are not reporting the temperatures from my SATA drives.

Under XP they all reported properly.

Has anyone managed to get Vista to report S.M.A.R.T. sensors?

Hi,
In order to get Speedfan to read the SMART data you must run Speedfan as
administrator. Right click on the Speedfan icon or .exe file and select "Run
as Administrator".

I wanted to add, if you want it to always run as administrator, right click
on the speedfan icon and select properties. Then under the compatibility tab
check the run this program as an administrator box.

Sorry, but I've tried that and also edited the settings to give it
full control. Not a single disk, there are four, appears.

Are your hard drives in a RAID array?

No, they are tied to 4 of the 6 available SATA slots on the 780Sli Mb.
THe other two are from panel e-Sata access (not used) and CD/DVD.

I'm sorry, I wish I knew what else to offer. I have two Vista machines, both
different with both SATA and PATA drives that Speedfan shows both the SMART
data and HD temperatures. As I said, I only had to run Speedfan as
administrator.
Only my RAID1 (two drives) does not provide this information.

Thanks, you've given great suggestions.

It has to be some annomaly in Vista since I'm using the same
motherboard, same drives and cables and same SpeedFan installation
package. What's different? Vista.

One further point, after some further searchs it appears the problem
is with nVdia drivers. For some unknown reason they have elected to
leave S.M.A.R.T. access out of their drivers. One argument is the
less-than-reliable reading; which I agree with if you are looking for
fine turning. But the data could still be worthwhile if looking at
trends or gross figures.

At any rate, that seems to be the issue until they change or there is
enough of a consumer backlash.
