I am trying to understand/clean-up some files on Vista.

My root directory contains three directories ($INPLACE.~TR, $RECYCLE.BIN,
and $WINDOWS.~Q) with a total of 1.2GB of space. What are they?

I have one file ("ff398120-755f-11dc-...") with a total of 11GB of space!
What is it?

What was the source of your information?

.... Thom

What are the $INPLACE.~TR and $WINDOWS.~Q folders for in Windows Vista?

Intended For
Windows Vista only

Info lifted from

http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache...lnk&cd=2&gl=uk

The $INPLACE.~TR and $WINDOWS.~Q folders are more-or-less garbage and can be
safely deleted.
If you don't feel comfortable deleting them outright, fire up the Disk
Cleanup utility (click Start and type Disk), select the Files discarded by
Windows upgrade item, and then click OK.

Hope this helps.

Rob

That was a helpful lead. That utility also identified some other excellent
candidates for deletion and I deleted them all.

I have 39GB allocated currently and that includes a single file that is
11GB. Can you suggest any possibilities for it?

Not sure but possibly a restore point file? Not a good idea to delete this
unless you know for sure.
