Using Vista Home Premium, the latest version of the synaptics touchpad
driver, and the latest version of firefox.

When I open firefox I always get the UAC popup window asking permission to
run the application AND the virtual scrolling and tap zones on my touchpad
don't function (they function everywhere but inside the browser - and they
function in IE). When I turn off UAC, no popup - AND the touchpad functions
normally.

I have tried turning off the popup by modifying the registry to "0" rather
than "2" (no popup, but touchpad still doesn't work), I have tried using
icacls commands to set the integrity to low (result: two popup windows), I
have tried reinstalling firefox, I have tried granting the user account full
rights, I have tried turning off the automatic updates. (Those are all of
the suggestions I have found for either the UAC popup for any browser other
than IE - all of the virtual scrolling problems seemed to be related to
earlier versions of firefox (and the fact that it only happens when UAC is
turned on, and only within Firefox, indicates to me it is a UAC-firefox
problem, not something directly related to synaptics.

BTW, the firefox icon does not have the security shield displayed - so it
should not require administrator rights.

I really don't want to run with UAC turned off, but I am not willing to
sacrifice touchpad functionality to run UAC

Get the latest Synaptic Drivers, download then right click the Installer
and select Run as Admin.... worked on my Toshiba.

Thanks, but I already did. Didn't work. (That's what I meant by "the latest
version of the Synaptic driver" in the first line of my post.) I also
reinstalled firefox.

Did you Run as Admin?

You might boot into Safe Mode and delete the touch pad in Device
Manager, reboot into normal mode and make sure the latest driver
is available.

After the fiasco installing Quicken 2007 (another several hour Vista tale of
woe), I have been doing every install as admin. (Download the .exe file,
right click on the .exe icon, install as admin (don't remember the exact
phrasing).

It really isn't as Synaptics driver problem. The driver works fine every
where except within Firefox when Vista's UAC is turned on. It works in
Mozilla with the Vista UAC turned off, and it works in IE even with the UAC
turned on. Whatever it is that is triggering the popup is also interfering
with the normal functioning of the touchpad. (For example, I can turn off
the UAC symptom - the popup - but the underlying trigger apparently still
interferes with the touchpad functionality)

Goto Program Files
Select your fiefox folder
Using permissions give your user 'Full control'

Next time you run it - it will ask permission and then uncheck 'dont ask me
again' it won't ask anymore

Thanks, but I already tried that (middle of third paragraph in my original
post). It still asks (and doesn't give me the option of not asking again).

Success! Finally. Total time (to date) to transfer 5 programs to my new
laptop and get them functional: 27 hours . It shouldn't be this hard.
Solving this problem accounts for well over half the time.

What finally worked was a third uninstall and reinstall, bare bones (no
optional reporting back to Mozilla , or anything else that was extra) run as
an administrator, and changing "Mozilla Firefox" to "Firefox" every time
"Mozilla Firefox" came up as a suggested name. Since each of these suggested
remedies had been individually tried before, I'm not sure what it was about
the combination finally fixed it - but I thought I'd share what worked in
case anyone else has this same problem.
