I am running Windows Live OneCare and the firewall is enabled. The Vista
Firewall services are set to automatic, however on bootup the Vista Firewall
is turned off. Shouldn't be a problem but whenever the Vista Firewall is
disabled I am getting unwanted traiffic on my laptop which the Live OneCare
isn't blocking. Any ideas??

Live OneCare has its own two-way firewall that replaces Vista's Windows
Firewall. You can set the Vista Firewall to 'disabled'

I don't want the Vista Firewall disabled as I'm getting unwanted traffic
through the Live OneCare but when I manually turn on the Vista Firewall I
don't get the unwated traffic. I'm just tired on manually turning on the
Vista Firewall. I would like a solution that will make it start up
automatically.

Hello Gail,
I don't have Live OneCare, but can't you disable it's firewall, and
keep the Vista firewall on? You said it already, " Live OneCare isn't
blocking --".

Thanks for the suggestion but I would prefer having them both running. I'm
just getting a little tired of having to turn the vista firewall on manually.

Windows Live One Care automatically disables the Vista firewall when you
install Live One Care, so in that respect it is doing its job. Regardless of
how many time you try to enable the Vista firewall, as soon as you reboot
your PC One Care will disable the vista firewall one again. Personally I
have never been a fan of One Care and other than for actually testing the
Beta versions One Care goes nowhere near my PC.

Two firewalls at the same time is not a good idea. Nuke NoCare's
firewall and you'll be fine. If you don't trust Vista's firewall (and
you shouldn't), check out Comodo, a free firewall solution that is a
very good firewall.

Not a good idea! You achieve no extra protection, you incur the extra
overhead of running two firewalls, and you run the risk (probably
small, but not zero) of conflicts between them.

See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu.../firewall.mspx
which includes the following:

"Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall
from a different company on my Windows XP computer?

"A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for typical
home computers, home networking, and small-business networking
scenarios. Using two firewalls on the same connection could cause
issues with connectivity to the Internet or other unexpected behavior.
One firewall, whether it is the Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall or a different software firewall, can provide substantial
protection for your computer."

That's about XP, but the principle is the same.

I personally would remove One Care. It is not something that you need. Using only the Windows Firewall is much safer and smarter

Just admit to yourself that you made a mistake, which you did, and uninstall
One Care.
