We aave a firewall on our wireless router, so I have switched off the WIndows
firewalls on our three PCs. However, since adding our first Vista notebook
it keeps turning its firewall back on.

Since you're talking about wireless where anyone can join your LAN on the
wireless and attack any computer on your LAN wired or wireless because it's
not secured properly from such an attack, maybe it best that you enable the
Vista FW, and the ones on the other computers too.

Have you heard of War Driving?

Anyone with any expertise can join your network on the wireless and be all
over the top of the computers, if they are not protected.

I would have both turned on, since Routers Firewall would be hardware based
and the one built into Windows Vista is software based. The extra protection
won't hurt anyone.

You really are pathetic, aren't you? Where did you learn that rubbish? With
that kind of thinking, running more than one software firewall should even
increase your security level even more. Sorry, but it doesn't work that
way. A firewall is a firewall and if the hardware based one is capable of
keeping someone out of your box, why in the name of gawd would you also run
a second software based firewall? Want to make Fista slower than it already
is?

Cheers.

Vista really wants wireless security, WPA or WPA2, set in the router.

oh, and forget about getting mental help as it requires some semblance
of a brain in order to be helped.
Obviously, you don't even come close to qualifying.

It's called "defense in depth" and is actually sound practice although
probably overkill for a small home network.

Thanks for the replies, my question was NOT about whether or not to use a
firewall, it was about the Vista filewall turning back on automatically. If
you have the experience and technical knowledge to answer that, I would be
grateful for a reply. (btw: we use wireless encryption behind the firewall,
only someone who felt the need to pick an argument would make such a silly
assumption without first checking with the originator of the question).

I must say, this is like being mugged on a street corner - a group of people
waiting to jump on the next post - this is very poor and not what I would
expect from a MS discussion group. But thank you to those who tried to be
positive and helpful.
