Vista freeze at boot

I have Vista home premium and have recently installed SP1. It is
freezing almost every boot about 5-6 sweeps into the Vista progress bar
that comes just after the BIOS loads. The first time I had to do a
system restore to before SP1. Then I reinstalled SP1 and after a couple
of boot-ups it is doing it again. Because I have to press the reset
button on the PC when it freezes it reboots to the option for choosing
normal, safe mode, etc. Safe mode will load ok and if I select "last
known good config" it usually boots (still with SP1), but then if I
immediately reboot it will again stop at the progress bar and I'm back
to where I started. Once the pc boots up it runs normally.
Any thoiughts on how to track down the problem?
