onedec, I had similar problem after loading video drivers for Intel 82945G
chipset from MS Update 01-26-08. I have a Compaq SR2180NX(HP built)
Two different things you can try.
1. If your computer is set up like mine on the screen were you select Safe
Mode there is an option to Repair Startup files. Select it. The program
checks the startup files and repairs them, if possible, without changing
anything else on your computer. May have to run several times to fix
everything.
2. Use System Restore to revert to a restore point before you started having
problems. This changes system settings made to your computer since the
restore point, but should not effect any any documents, photos, etc. Help and
Support has several articles on using System Restore.
In Safe Mode, open the menu and type System Restore in the search box. In
the results box, right-click on System Restore. In the popup menu click on
Run as Administrator.
Another method to get to System Restore is to type cmd in search.
Right-click on cmd.exe. Select Run as Administrator. When the black screen
appears type rstrui.exe and pres enter.
Will check back to see how things are going.
