Vista Freezing Issues

Alright, I've been living with this for long enough now that I needed to post
this.

Since I recieved my "free upgrade" to Vista from HP, I installed it and did
the upgrade option as they suggested. For the first couple of weeks my PC ran
beautifully and I had absolutely no issues with it.

Since about the beginning of April, my system seems to be going downhill. I
update frequently and as soon as they appear to ensure my system runs as it
should. However, I've noticed if the system is left idle for more than an
hour or more I can return to it to find each program I load or had running to
slowly freeze up one by one and not restart as Vista asks it too. To further
complicate the problem my system will start to not respond to Task Manager
requests or even Start menu requests to the point I have to hold the power
button down to turn off my system. This problem only occurs to me once or
twice a week depending on how often I use the PC.

My bigger problem started at the beginning of April as well. I have seen
questions and threads about it all over the internet but have yet to find a
responce/solution to it. When I tell Vista to Shutdown or Restart, it flatly
refuses to do so. It will shutdown all User Interface options like it's
supposed to, log-out the user, save their settings and then freeze on
"Shutting Down".
To those who will say "give it time", I have. I have left the PC on this
screen for a full day and it has not shutdown or restarted. I am getting sick
and tired of hard-booting my PC, and anyone that uses the PC is complaining
to me about these problems.

I'm coming here, to Microsoft itself, asking for possible solutions to this
problem. I have been a loyal customer for years now and would like to see
some sort of solution to this seeing as it seems to be a common problem.

Thank you in advance.

OK,
When was the last time you did a disk cleanup and a defrag?

I did a disk clean-up probably two weeks ago, I make sure that the computer
has as much few space as possible...as such a majority of my programs are on
an External Hard-drive.
Defrag was done before upgrading, but considering I try to run a defrag once
a month or two, it shouldn't be the problem (especially considering my XP PC
doesn't need a defrag very often, maybe once every four to six months).

I was keeping this from another post

Karsten

:Shutdown problems are generally caused by a program and/or process
refusing to exit gracefully. With Vista, drivers and/or
not-quite-compatible programs running resident (antivirus, etc.) are the
prime suspects. Shutdown problems can also be caused by malware.

1. Determine that the computer is virus/malware-free:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

2. Go through this shutdown troubleshooter if your machine is clean:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

3. Check and see if Vista itself detects a problem:

Control Panel>System and Maintenance>Performance information and tools
Advanced tools in left pane

Start > All Programs > Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions >
View Problem History
