I've just gotten a new machine with Vista Home on it. All seems to be fine,
but after any windows updates, the next time i restart/reboot the computer
windows hangs just as it's loading the desktop, forcing me to reset the
computer, go into safe mode and do a system restore to preceed the update.

I've switched automatic updates off for now until i find the solution. Any
thoughts?

Hi,

Does it seem to be any update or just one specific one?
Have you contacted the manufacturer about this yet?

It seems to be any and all updates. Basically, anytime i do any sort of
update, when it reboots, or if i turn the computer off and then back on, it
starts to boot fine into my identity, loads up the start menu, the new clock,
notepad, weather function things (sorry, i forgot what they call that) even
loads up Windows live Messenger but seems to hang loading up the desktop...
the hour glass icon comes up and i can't click on anything. All i can do is
restart the computer, go into safe made and go to my last system restore
point before any updates, which is of course a pain.

I thought it may have had something to do with my external firewire drive,
but i've tried with them detached and the same thing happens,

Any thoughts? Anyone else having this problem?

Could be one or more files needed got corrupted. Is that weather
gadget a third party offering? Try disabling it, they're easy to turn
on again. Otherwise you may have to try a repair from the Vista DVD.
Go to Help, enter 'startup repair tool' to learn more. That's about
the only way to recover short of reinstalling if some files got
corrupted.

Anything in any Event Log?

It could be a driver not installing. Have you tried telling Vista to
make a boot log so you get a list of what Vista tried to load and
failed to load when it boots?

Hey Adam..

Thanks for writing.

As it turns out, i tried disabling my firewire card yesterday. Everything
worked fine. So i went and found a new driver and now everything seems to be
ok. I tried a few restarts yesterday that worked, so i'll see how i go today!

Such a simple thing that i hadn't thought of..

Now if they'd only have Vista Anytime Upgrade in Australia..

I had simpilar problems with my vista - it would hang after updates and after
boot up and sit there for 20 minutes before anything would work. Then you go
and run a program ( it would ask you if you really wanted to run it?) - no
I'm just doing it for fun? Then it would hang there - had alot of trouble
with drivers. Seems video drivers would crash and caused would of the hangs (
only knew this from reboot went vist a reported the video driver was
recovered) During the hang periods - I would try the task manager to see what
the problem was but it starts minized and it was no help - So I said the hell
with it and reload XP pro back on my pc. IT flies now - no problems
everything works great! Vista OS is a piece of SH@#$%^T - I don't recommend
it to anybody ( if there friends of you) Now it there not then give it to
them. Maybe we should give Vista OS to the Iranians!!

Sorry 1st time posting.
Hey , jason here.
I've just got my machine as well with vista premium sp1.
My vista hangs quite often , when i open a few programmes ( msn, itunes, ie )
not too much right .
I mean there's no lag at all, it just hangs. Also happens when starting
vista, just blank black screen.
So when i force shutdown, and restart. i'll enter vista repair something. It
enters windows, repair then it'll just be that way. i have to force shutdown
again.
Can you provide me answers, whether it's vista or hardware.
If hardware, lets say my graphic card is faulty : would this be the symptoms ?

I'm having a similar issue & had to turn off my updates as well. Suddenly was
unable to connect to the internet... kept getting a message saying no
connection was available. Dell had me do a system restore, but I kept having
to restore to 8/6/08 every day in order to get online. The diagnostics I ran
all recognized that I had a strong and active broadband connection.

The correction that 'stagefright' wrote on 3/27 is too advanced... I don't
understand it!

Can anyone help?

Same problem here. Unexpected hangs and restarts, all since a reinstallation
by service technicians, which left me with a computer that barely worked. I
had to get on the phone with a service specialist who guided me through the
rest of the installation. It was an incomplete load, and none of the
diagnostic testing had been completed. That was April.

I've been limping along ever since.
