vista hangs during shutdown installing update

Vista(32 bit) home premium would not shut down. Screen said installing
update, do not shut off or pull power. Ctrl-alt-del would not work. Had to
pull power cord and reboot. Why? I noticed that I had an update to install,
but it did not seem to work. As you can tell I am not a real computer
expert. Help is appreciated.
