Why do I get a lot of HDD sounds when I start the computer and later on
when I'm surfing.

It's possible the hard drive is dying. Remember, back up is a computer
user's best friend.

It's probably doing some file-keeping, defragging or indexing. There are
loads of services in Vista that keep the drives busy when the machine is not
doing much.

Disable SuperFetch and Indexing services (Google will help). They abuse HDD unmercifully.

Not to worry unless it is really noisy. Is this something that has been
getting louder? Keeping up on backups is always recommended. This is normal
to have an enormous amount of activity when starting the system, then with
surfing IE uses the disk alot to store temp files.
Also if you have a notebook PC it will seem louder since you are sitting
about a foot away from it.

And yes! - Don't forget to disable anti-virus crapware.
