I am running Vista Home 64Bit. 2 days old. Nothing special installed
Office 2003. Adobe professional, Autocad. After I installed these apps
resources utilization was normal. After a day or so of continuou
operation and a few MS Vista "updates" Windows are always running a
80%+ resources, even when I am not doing anything. I see many cmd.exe*3
tasks popping up in the task manager about every second. What can thi
be? What can I try

All of those programs add services. Run services.msc and see what is
running. Adjust startup options from within Adobe and Autocad.

Also, make sure the machine is virus/malware-free:

If the machine is clean and you are still having issues, do clean-boot
troubleshooting:

Take a look in the Task Manager Processes tab. You might get a clue there.

You need to tell us the make and model of the computer and some specs,
especially the amount of memory.

If you are running Vista x64 with 2GB of memory or less the hard drive
activity is probably due to paging some contents of memory out to the hard
drive and back. If so, you can follow all the software tips the other
respondents are giving here and it won't help much. If you are running 2GB
or less, either add more memory or get a ReadyBoost certified usb thumb
drive (4GB).

Vista does extra work the first day or so because it is indexing a lot of
files but based on what you say you have installed that work should not last
more than a few hours.
