Vista Home Basic & WMP11

am I correct in saying that DVD video's won't run using WMP11 on a vista
home basic laptop... because whenever I try it I get an error, I can
play DVD's back using my old PowerDVD but even with that installed and
ffdshow codec utility I still can't get them to play using WMP?

Or am I completely wrong, and if so what I can do (that is free-won't
cost me any more money)to rectify this issue?
