Vista home basic and XP Professional

Hi I have a Hp Compaq Presario V3000 laptop with ista home basic pre
installed.

Statement from HP:

If you have an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario consumer notebook PC
that shipped with Windows Vista, you should not attempt to downgrade
to Windows XP. Changing the operating system (OS) will cause severe
operational problems. Many of the components, such as sound, video,
graphics, network connectivity, drives, or other devices and peripherals,
may have limited functionality, or may not work at all. You should do
some research on the support policies of hardware and software manufacturers,
and review the problems experienced by other users, before you consider
changing the operating system.

You may experience the following conditions if you downgrade an
HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario consumer notebook, which was
designed for Vista, to an older operating system:

HP does not provide Windows XP-compatible drivers for functions such
as sound, video, graphics, network connectivity, drives, or other devices
and peripherals for these consumer notebooks.

Changing the operating system may require you to reinstall the original
software image when troubleshooting possible software and hardware
issues with technical support.

Some component manufacturers do not provide Windows XP-compatible
drivers for components that they designed for Windows Vista.
Even if a third-party company or Windows itself can provide generic drivers
that will allow all of your devices to operate, the performance of your
HP PC may be less than optimal.

VPC is not supported on Vista Basic Edition. It is supported
only with Vista Business, Enterprise or Ultimate editions.

Another reason for me not to buy Home Basic (I'm running Ultimate).

On the download page for Virtual PC 2007, it specifically says which SKU's
of Windows Vista it supports: Business; Enterprise; and Ultimate.

Also: when installing on a unsupported SKU like Home Premium, you will get a
warning letting you know you are attempting to install on a unsupported SKU.

If you choose to proceed installing on a unsupported SKU, Microsoft or any
other software company can't be held accountable. There is enough warnings
in place to make you aware that Virtual PC 2007 is not supported on Home
Premium. That being said, installing Virtual PC 2007 shouldn't crash your PC
causing you to reinstall the OS. You may have other problems going on there.

In regards to the fact that Virtual PC 2007 does not support installation on
Home Premium, I suggest leaving that feedback on Virtual PC Guy's blog:

Actually, my experience with it is simply this . . .

It works just fine, but being unsupported basically means it hasn't been
tested on the unlisted OSs and don't expect any help from Microsoft if you
run into any problems running it.

I've run it without any hiccups on Vista Home Premium for quite some time.

So what do you suggest then, do I go in for Vista Business or Ultimate?

Or home premium is good enough??

I would recommend Vista Ultimate for a home user since it has many things
built in to the operating system which can only be performed by third party
tools (sometimes expensive) when you use XP or most of the lesser Vista
systems. I refer to such tools as A. Partitioning, B. Backups, and C.
Imaging (you don't have to buy Acronis True Image, Norton's Ghost, Partition
Magic, or BootItNG).
