Vista Home Premium. installed recommended Updat- MS Search 4.0, now machine refuses to boot

This came in as a recommended update.
After the update the machine asked for a reboot, but did not finish
rebooting.
Last known good configuration and safe mode show files loading, but then
just sit there for an hour or more without actually booting to Vista.
Without being able to boot, I can't remove the update or do a system
restore.
I hate the idea of having to do a recovery because MS is too incompetent to
make an update work.
But we are talking about Vista...
Any suggestions?

Try Method 1 first. If no joy, try Method 3. You will need Vista's
installation media for both :
