Vista Home Premium - Won't Update Windows, or Defender! HELP

My Vista won't update either autopmatically or manually. Have tried
uninstalling any software, tried the Onelive safety scan beta (which failed).
Also won't let me update McAfee virus software, so I can't do an up to date
scan using that, either. Internet connection works fine. Microsoft is no help
of course, since you can't reach them.
Can anyone help me?
