Is there any advantage to the home user to insist on Windows Vista Ultimate
vs. Home Premium? I don't wish to set up an elaborate home wireless or other
complex network.

There's no significant advantage in having Ultimate over Home Premium imho.

It's simply a matter of what features come with each version. Other
than the feature set, the two are identical--equally stable, fast,
etc.

For the enormous majority of home users, Home Premium is fine and the
extra features of Ultimate are unnecessary. But only you can tell what
*you* need/want. Check here:

I think one of the important features Ultimate has over Home Premium is
being able to restore previous versions of files. So if you overwrite a
file accidently you can recover it.

Only if you want any of the features that Ultimate has but Home
Premium does not - see here:-

Don

There are many more differences in features than just networking. See the
following websites for more complete information.

If you think you might -ever- want to Remote Desktop into the PC in
question, then the answer is simple: Ultimate.

I'm sure this doesn't apply to you, but if you want to join a domain, you'll
at least need Vista Business. And if you want all the Home Premium features
that go along with it, you'll need Vista Ultimate.

PS: I really don't like the way Microsoft has made created the various
versions. To me, the Home/Professional duo was perfect in XP. I know why
they changed it (more potential revenue), but it can get aggravating if you
only need certain features of certain versions.

I have "Vista Home Premium" Don, and there is one feature that is really
missing : It cannot make a disk-mage of your system.
I had to buy "Acronis True Image" to make complete backups of of my system.
