The computer looks like it's booting, i can see the little bar going across
then the window opens to a mouse pointer and you are done...

I went to the recovery setup and went to fix my computer and that didn't
work. reading some articles it went to the dos prompt and done the bootrec
/fixboot and the bootrec /fixmbr and they we succesfull. the files are all
there and look ok .

Any ideas other than reloading?

What happens if you try Safe mode? Last known good configuration? Command
line and run rstrui.exe?

Fixing the boot files won't help as you are obviously getting past that
stage. You need to work on what's in the startup axis that's not supposed to
be there.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the reply,
safe mode takes me to the same screen wioth the mouse pointer. I was able to
do a restore back a week ago, but that take me to the mouse pointer again.
The startup repair could nto detect a problem.

I ran the rstrui.exe and it could not find any restore points, don't know
how i got a restore berore..

Hi,

Then I'd run a disk check from the command line at this point.

Rick,
chkdsk was run and it said "no problems found"
I was able to run a bootlog text at startup and it generated a ntbt.log I
viewed the log file and i got 3/4 the way through the log and then it when to
unreadable characters.

Hi,

Were it me, I would use BartPE or similar with plugins for malware and boot
from disk and run scans on the system, and also load registry hives to check
the startup lines for unwanted entries. Basically work from outside Vista to
detect what's causing the failed boot. Otherwise, you'll likely need to
reload.
