Vista, IE7 and DEP

I am using Vista Home Premium. I recently installed Flashget 1.80 which was
my favorite download manager in XP. Unfortunately IE7 could not be opened
after Flashget installation. Vista says Data Execution Protection (DEP)
shall prevent IE7 to open. An exception for IE7 in DEP settings didn't help.
Only after inactivating the Flashget plugin in IE7 I was able to run IE7
again.
The second problem arose when I tried to install the security shield
software of my bank. This addin locked the IE7 again.
And today I installed the Java Runtime Environment. Now when there is a java
coded page IE7 stops working and closes automatically due to DEP!!!

Any advice is welcome...

I think DEP can be disabled either in your motherboard BIOS, or using
BCDedit (download VistaBootPro for a graphic tool), or both might need to be
done. Have you googled for your particular problem - I would use "DEP Vista
problem" as keywords.

Cheers

Yes I did but after posting this message...
Now I know that I can switch off the DEP in IE7 options.

Anyway, this is annoying. I have to leave an important security method just
for using a regular addin like java.

Thank you very much...

Sumer,

I've similar problem with other software.. to fix them I chaned the DEP
setting from Microsoft apps to *all apps*... setting it to all apps allows
you to *exclude* some application that causes problems.

For example, Dungeon siege was causing problems on my setup and since it's
cnsidered a MS app, I could exclude it until I did the above.

This solution allows you to keep DEP running for most apps, but also allows
you to exclude those that aren't 'dep friendly'

remember that excluding some apps is a bit less secure but since DEP
friendly apps aren't the norm yet (we're getting there), I can live with
excluding a few one that I trust.

Happy computing..

Regards.

Thanks a lot Rej but in my case I cannot find the executable which causes
the problem. On the main DEP screen I have placed an exclusion for
iexplore.exe but it didn't help. Now I have turned off the DEP in IE7
options and everything seems OK.
Thanks again for the hints.

Sumer,

Sure thing

hmm, iexplore.exe is one application that I know of that does NOT cause
issues with DEP.

I'm wonderign if perhaps one of the addons you are using might be the cause
of the issue (a toolbar, activeX addon etc).

You can always try to disable all addons by going to Tools->Manage
Add-Ons->Enable or Disable Addons and disable them all and see. Up to you
though...

Good luck

Regards...

Hi Sumer Yamaner,

I had a similair problem like that before. Go to this link for
details, but I believe you'll have to do this secion:

*HOW TO ENABLE/DISABLE DEP:*
**
'http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/65790-dep-data-execution-prevention.html?ltr=D'

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks...
This is the best solution:

A) Open Control Panel.
B) Click on Internet Options icon. (If you don't see icons in Control Panel,
then click Classic View in upper left corner)
C) Click on Advanced tab.
D) Scroll down a bit and either check(Enable) or uncheck(Disable) Enable
memory protection to help mitigate online attacks. (See screenshot below)
