VISTA IMAGE BACKUP AND RESTORE PROGRAM QUESTIONS

Currently I am using windows XP Pro and plan to purchase a new Dell computer
next month. I am trying to become more informed about Vista before I
purchase the new computer. If anyone can help with the following questions,
I would very much appreciate any replies.

a. Can the Vista image backup program be disabled? The reason for my
question is that I would like to use the Storagecraft ShadowProtect Desktop
Edition Image Program (http://forum.storagecraft.com/Community/files/d). I
had originally planned to use the Symantec Ghost program but decided stay
away from Symantec products. One of my concerns is that I have always
read/been told not to have two imaging programs installed on a computer at
the same time.

b. Are there any newsgroups and forums specifically for the Vista Image
backup and restore program?

Yes, you can disable backups. You can make them "manual," on demand. I think
it is the default but I am not sure.

Backups are available on Business and Ultimate only, so if you buy Home or
Home Premium you will be fine anyway.

I backup four computers on my home LAN. One machine is Vista Home Premium
an the others are XP Home Media Edition. The Vista machine came with Backup
and Restore Center and the others with XP native, NTbackup. They are
scheduled for a once a week backup to my Buffalo 2TB TeraStation. The
initial full backups took from 8 to 15 hours, now they take a few (10s of)
minutes each to do an incremental backup. I tested bringing back a few
selected files and folders and it seems to work just fine. Works for me,
painless.
