I am trying to install Vista from an Xp Pro Sp2 machine. Whether I try an
upgrade or clean install, I get error msg during the expanding files that
says. "windows could not update boot configuration. "

I'm looking for a solution to this problem

Thanks in advance.

Do you have something like GoBack installed? Third-party security software
that protects the mbr so nothing can be written to it?

The only security software on the computers is Norton Corporate(managed).

Then look at its options. Obviously something unusual is preventing Vista
from writing to the mbr and only you can see the machine to find out what
that is.

On some machines there is a setting in bios that prevents changing MBR.
