Vista Install Instructions

Okay, my old second PC locked up during the final "completing installation".
Nowhere in the booklet that came with my $200.00 Vista Basic is there any
mention of what to do. So, I restarted the PC expecting setup to continue
where it left off. NOT, it backed out the entire install. I will give it
one more shot at an install, and if it locks up again, I want my $200.00 back
and I'll stick with my XP on my other brand new Dell with its now not going
to happen free upgrade to Vista. Yes, Microsoft, my older PC meets more than
the minimum requirements for Vista.

Hmmmm.. I wonder if it was really locked up or if it was busy creating
settings like mine did...

Nah, don't try to figure it out; just trash the whole idea and roll back to
W95.

I'm not being facetitious here, and suspect you've done this but clean that
DVD really well--put some juice on it and use a cloth radially from the
center.

You also might be able to run Win RE's Startup Repair (I know you didn't get
it installed but you could see if it shows up in setup) depending on how far
along in the installation you actually were--I can't pin point from your
description, but I do appreciate you say it "backed out the entire install."

also sometimes effective, and more effective than it is from the F8 Windows

I don't know the particulars of your "old second PC" hardware, and if those
have any impact on this.

You could run the Vista upgrade advisor, but having said that I've seen it
more inconsistent than poor Rex Grossman (Da Bearsssss) on a rainy day.

Define "locks up". How long did you leave it? It does occasionally appear to
lock up, but really be busy. Sometime the completing install part takes the
most time doing what appears to be nothing at all.

It also may be due to drive issues. That is the point in the install that it
begins to install drivers. Do try it on your other laptop when you get the
free upgrade. Particularly the newer computers should have better driver
support, although at this point the quality of drivers is low. I would
expect that it would be fine. I'm using Vista right now on a Dell I
purchased about 1.5 years ago and install works fine.
