After each of the handful of times I installed Windows XP, I found a
folder named /i386 containing XP installation files stuck somewhere on my
system. Fortunately, there was a registry hack that allowed the folder to be
moved properly to a location of my choosing.
Spending some time searching the web on the subject, I'm now not sure
that Vista puts an equivalent folder on the system. So perhaps my concern is
moot.

Again, relying upon my experience with XP, a few Microsoft programs left
large folders filled with .cab files somewhere on my system after
installation. Even using custom installation, I had no control over the
location of these folders. Office 2003 left a folder named /MSOCache on the
largest volume. (I was able to move this though I don't recall how.) Windows
OneCare Live left a folder named /f89619b37846bb5134 on the largest volume.
In Vista, I'd like to chose the location for this type of folder. I was
expecting that Vista might have a default location written in its registry
where such folders were directed.
