DELL INSPIRON 1720
HARDWARE: INTEL CORE DUO 2 2.2GHZ, 2GB RAM
GRAPHIC CARD: NVIDIA 8600 GT 512MB
SOFTWARE: MCAFEE SECURITY, DELL MEDIADIRECT
Hi,

I am having a problem with running Vista properly in my laptop
initially, i had the intention to reinstall Vista in my laptop
so i restarted my computer and press F12 to boot Vista DVD
got pass the user setting, agreement, and selected a fresh
installation, and selected the main partition
and just when everything was working fine (stage 5/5: Completing
Installion)
the installation stopped/paused
i tried restarting my laptop (without booting) and it doesn't go pass
the Windows loading screen (the green bar just keeps looping)
so i tried booted the Vista DVD again and clicked Repair
it didn't find a solution for me, and neither can i find an exact case
in this forum
here is the report:

*NAME: STARTUPREPAIRV2
PROBLEM SIGNATURE 1: EXTERNALMEDIA
PROBLEM SIGNATURE 2: 6.06.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386

PROBLEM SIGNATURE 9: UNKNOWN
PROBLEM SIGNATURE 10: 1168
OS VERSION: 6.06000..2.0.0.256.1
LOCAL ID: 3076*

btw i already run the diagnostics, it is not a hardware problem
i've read several SIMILAR cases, is it something to do with the McAfee
in addition some had suggested to run the sfc.exe, but i can't even log
into Vista, so i can't use the run command

please help! thank you!

1. To reinstall from a vista disk, set the Bios to boot from the DVD Drive
with the Vista disk in it.

2. Delete the existing patition containing the corrupt Vista OS.
Just follow instructions on the disk for everything.

3. Set up a partition to install Vista in; usually the entire drive if you
are not computer savvy.

4. Format the drive

5. Install vista; follow prompts.

If you have a "hidden partition" with vista recovery files, read computer's
documentation or contact Dell.

Hi Titus--

Are you working with a Recovery DVD from Dell or a Vista DVD. I know Dell
has promised to ship a Vista DVD on their blog with a new PC so I assume
it's a Vista DVD.

I'm not sure how you know hardware is not part of the problem and remember
sometimes no boots and other problems can have both software and hdw
components. The odds are though this is not hdw induced. You didn't say
what the nature of your inital problems were. I can't tell from what you
wrote if you formatted the drive before trying to reinstall Vista "selected
a fresh installation and selected the main partition" but I asume so.

What you've written is you can't boot--do you have a BSOD stop error besides
I guess the "report" you've gotten as info from Startup Repair? I'm talking
about the numbers (in particular the first set) and the short worded message
on a blue screen?

You have other options you should exhuast:

***Using the F8 Environment***

***Taking Full Advantage of the F8 Options (Windows Advanced Options Menu)
by starting the PC and tapping F8 once per second when the firmware screen
with the pc manufacturer's name shows a few seconds after restarting***:

The F8 options in Vista are the same as XP, and the link for Safe Mode Boot
options is labled XP by MSFT but they are the same for Vista (they haven't
updated to add Vista to the title as they have with several MSKBs that apply
to both).

Again, pressing F8 repeatedly when you seem the firmware screen may be is a
generic way to launch Windows RE on some OEM Vista computers.

You could also:

Think: I have 4 different ways to get back my XP at F8 and try 'em in order.
1) Safe Mode 2) Safe Mode with Cmd to Sys Restore which is simply a cmd
prompt in safe mode 3) Safe Mode with Neworking 4) LKG or Last Known Good
Configuration

Try to F8 to the Windows Adv Options Menu>try 3 safe modes there (I don't
use WGA) and Last Known Good>then I go to Win RE in Vista. That gives you a
choice of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command
Prompt.

These methods are outlined in

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP/and Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding System Restore from MSFT:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../faqsrwxp.mspx

System Restore can be run from the Win RE recovery environment from the same
link as Startup Repair, and sometimes it will work from one F8 safe mode
location or from the Win Recovery Environment when it won't work from other
locations.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx

Repair Install (Method 2 in this link):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315341

In addition you can use the Bootsect tool to manually repair the boot sector
by accessing the command prompt from the DVD or from F8 and typing at the
prompt:

Bootsect.exe is available from the \Boot\folder of the Windows Vista DVD and
can be run from within System Recovery or Windows XP on a dual boot.

1. Use Bootsect.exe to restore the Windows Vista MBR and the boot code that
transfers control to the Windows Boot Manager program. To do this, type the
following command at a command prompt: Drive:\boot\Bootsect.exe /NT60 All

In this command, Drive is the drive where the Windows Vista installation
media is located.

Note The boot folder for this step is on the DVD drive.
2. Use Bcdedit.exe to manually create an entry in the BCD Boot.ini file for
the earlier version of the Windows operating system. To do this, type the
following commands at a command prompt.

Note In these commands, Drive is the drive where Windows Vista is
installed. • Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /create {ntldr} –d "Description
for earlier Windows version"

Note In this command, Description for earlier Windows version can be any
text that you want. For example, Description for earlier Windows version can
be "Windows XP" or "Windows Server 2003".
• Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=x:

Note In this command, x: is the drive letter for the active partition.
• Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /set {ntldr} path \ntldr
• Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} –addlast

3. Restart the computer.

******Using the BootRec.exe Tool

Using the System Recovery Tool from the Repair link on the DVD after the
language choice in the lower left hand corner you can select command prompt
and you have the following options:

Bootrec.exe (You can use this tool to recover Vista even when you do not
receive the error message that is the title of the 2nd linked MSKB below):

Good luck,

murphy,

thank you for ur instructions
i have tried deleted all the partitions, thus i only had one left which
is the entire HD
since i deleted everything to scratch, so i couldn't format anything
i tried the installation again, but the same thing happened at the same
spot (5th stage completion)

in addition, after shutting the laptop down and restarting it (without
booting), i have the choice of safe mode and normal start
when i chose safe mode, files started loaded being loaded
but the screen freezes at crcdisk.sys (the one b4 tht is CLASSPNP.sys)

so i can't start windows normally and in safe mode!

HELP!!!

could it be the vista dvd problem? if so how do i check?

You can access system restore from the Repair link that comes up after the
language setup screen when you pop in the Vista DVD if that's what you
have--you still haven't clarified that (because it's unusual for OEM PC
makers to ship one with a new pc thanks to MSFT--but Dell has promised to do
that with Vista).

I don't know who Murphy is or where his or her post is.

I don't know what you mean by

"since i deleted everything to scratch, so i couldn't format anything"

You can format a drive with nothing on it, but you should be able to do any
formatting you get done with the Vista DVD. I don't know which of the
methods if any you tried that I gave you, because you aren't clear.

Try tapping F8 about once per second to get into Safe Mode. That should
work. If you can't get into Safe Mode there, are you aware that there is a
system restore option at the Repair link that pops up after the language
screen with the Vista DVD?

Screen shots are below. It's an important principle in fixing Vista or XP
to remember that system restore may work from one Safe Mode @ F8's Advanced
Options or from the DVD when it does not work from another. Why is a good
question.

Startup Repair will look like this when you put in the Vista DVD:

http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png

It will automatically take you to this on your screen:

http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png

That will allow you to go to the Vista setup that has a Repair link on
thelower left corner>click it and then you'll see a gray backgrounded list
and I want you to click Startup Repair from it and follow the directions.

The gray screen after you click the first link in the above pic will look
like this:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winv...ir/Image17.gif

Good luck,

CH

Normally I would have recommended using the PC Restore function to
reload Vista on your computer by pressing F8 just after the Dell splash
screen (takes you to the menu that asks how you want to start: safe
mode, etc). However, if you have deleted all of the partitions on the
hard drive then the PC Restore image has been removed and a manual
install using the Vista DVD is going to be your only option.

If you are using the Dell branded Vista installation DVD then it should
not have the problems. If needed I can set up to have a replacement DVD
sent out to you (and, unfortunately, it sounds like it may be needed).
For the actual install itself, Mick has the correct steps.

Once Vista is loaded you will need to install the drivers, all of which
are on the Dell Resource (aka Drives & Utilities) CD, or available for
download from the Dell support website ('Dell Support - Technical
Support, Drivers & Downloads, Troubleshooting, Product Manuals and Order
Status' (http://support.dell.com)). The drivers you will need to
install, in the order they need to be loaded, are:

* Dell™ Notebook System Software
* Intel® Mobile Chipset Driver
* Mobile Intel® GMA X3100 Video Controller
* Ricoh® Media Card Reader Driver
* Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip (Intel Turbo Memory)
* Broadcom® 440X 10/100 Integrated Network Controller
* Wireless driver (if applicable)
* IDT® STAC 9205 Audio Driver
* Modem Daughter Card (MDC) driver
* Dell Touch Pad Driver
* Bluetooth® driver and stack

The Dell Notebook System Software must be installed first, before the
Intel Chipset Software. The Notebook System Software and Chipset
Software are, basically, the driver for the motherboard which is why
they must both be installed.

If you have any other questions on this, or if you still need help
getting a replacement Vista DVD, please let me know.

Hi,
i am a proud owner of the inspiron 1720 ...the problem u have told
can be solved very simply....when u load vista...at the partition select
screen there is a menu on the bottom which gives u advanced drive
options...in that select load driver ..now eject the vista dvd from ur
drive and put in the drivers dvd from DELL ( gery coloured one) and
click next now it will show you a driver to be loaded this is the sata
driver ....now click next again and u will return to the partition
select screen ...pop out the driver dvd and insert the vista dvd back
....now continue and install ...it will complete...

Inorder to skip the above process u have to go to the bios and select
ATA instead of AHCI for hard disk settings and disable the flash module
.....for any clarifications contact me..
