Vista Installation problem

I have not been able to get any app to install for several weeks now. This
started when I tried to install a Windows update to Vista and now I cannot
install anything. I am signed into my laptop as an admin but everything just
hangs including not being able to cancel the install. I'm using Vista Home
Premium on a laptop. Any suggestions are appreciated!!!
