Hello Everyone!

I've seen other threads on here regarding the sleep issue, but most of
them haven't really matched mine too much. Plus I didn't really want to
hijack some else's thread with my issue. I apologize in advance.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 pre-loaded with Vista Ultimate. About a
month after I received it, I started having issue where it would lock up
when I attempt to manually put it into sleep mode by pressing the power
button. It was also doing the same thing when restarting or shutting it
down. I would have to hold down the power button to power it completely
off, then power it back on to get back to log back in. Figuring it was
some sort of software or driver conflict, I backed up and re-imaged it.

Upon reinstalling everything, I was having the same issue described
above. I also noticed I was getting the following errors in the event
log:

EVENT ID: 41
TYPE: KERNEL-POWER
DESCRIPTION: THE LAST SLEEP TRANSITION WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. THIS ERROR
COULD BE CAUSED IF THE SYSTEM STOPPED RESPONDING FAILED OR LOST POWER
DURING THE SLEEP TRANSITION.

A second time, I re-imaged the laptop, installed the most updated
drivers from the Dell website and downloaded/installed the update from
Microsoft (with the exception of drivers). Again, I was having issues
with sleep, shutting down and rebooting. The current power settings are
set to High Performance.

I've also change the settings in the power setting to the follow:

SET HARD DRIVE TO TURN OFF A MINUTE OR 2 BEFORE SLEEP.
SET HYBRID AND HIBERNATE MODES TO \"OFF\"
UNDER USB SETTINGS SELECT \"DISABLE\"
UNDER MULTIMEDIA SELECT \"ALLOW .....\"

I then went through the troubleshooting steps at the following URL:
'Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems - Vista Forums'

Now, I don't have any power options in my bios to set sleep modes. The
laptop has the latest BIOS update from Dell. When I run powercfg -a, is
shows the laptop is capable of S3 Sleep Standby. S1 and S2 and shown and
not supported.

I've even tried this hotfix from Microsoft, but this also didn't seem
to work either:
'A Windows Vista-based computer stops responding when you resume the
computer from hibernation' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928135)

I even ran chkdsk and memory test, both came back just fine. At this
point, I'm at a loss. Is there anything else anyone can think of that I
haven't tried yet? If there is any other information needed, please let
me know. Thanks.

Hi Everyone.

I believe I was able to conquer the sleep issue with my laptop. I'
posting this so others can possibly fix their issue as well.

I was able to "acquire" a final copy of service pack 1 for Vista. Onc
that installed, my laptop still would not sleep or shut down properly.
went over the steps shown 'here' (http://tinyurl.com/2uelqm) again, bu
still had issue.

This time, I ran MSCONFIG and selected SELECTIVE STARTUP like in th
article above and unchecked LOAD STARTUP ITEMS. Now this time, I clicke
on the SERVICES tab and checked HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES and clicke
DISABLE ALL and rebooted. After rebooting, my laptop went into slee
mode just fine. I also used the 'sleeper
(http://www.passmark.com/products/sleeper.htm) application to test th
sleep modes. After every test, I would run MSCONFIG, check one service
disabled, reboot and start the process over again.

In my case, I found out it was Trend Micro Internet Security Pro tha
was causing my problems. After spending the day backing up m
information and reloading Vista (along with my other apps and alternat
antivirus), I haven't had the problem so far. My laptop did turn on an
locked up in the middle on the night once, but I believe that I had t
do with an update earlier that evening from Microsoft.

Anyhow, I hope this helps someone else. I know I was pulling my hai
out for a few weeks looking for a solution that worked. =
