Vista just not starting

Bought a new desk top HP Pavillon with Vista installed, Home Premium, and
has worked fine for the past three months. Yesterday worked on it and
switched it off, swithed back on three hours later and Vista loads upto the
Windows circular logo and all I get a completely black screen with an active
mouse arrows. Tried going through all the options offered in F8 but still
getting the same results. Can anyone help or has anyone any idea on this
problem.

Hello Andy,

Run Windows in safe mode, and try a Restore Point.

How long are you leaving Vista to load 'after' the logo appears before
switching the pc off and then on again? Strangely this has happened a number
of times to me but, in my case, the black screen and mouse pointer appear
'after' log in. At this point the PC will just sat there with a black screen
and no disk activity. I haven't actually timed the event, but it seems like
2 or 3 minutes of blank screen and then' all of a sudden' disk activity
starts and then the start button, taskbar, and notification bar appear
(still black screen above this bar) and then finally the desktop appears.
The problem only occurs occasionally and I haven't paid too much attention
to it. I have found that, if left long enough, the desktop usually appears.
You could always try a system restore from safe mode if the desktop is not
loading. Also have you installed any software or updated any drivers prior
to this problem happening?

Hi John,
I've actually left the machine on for a straight 6 hours with no results.
Haven't done any updating myself ut had Windows Update on and I'm getting to
believe there was an update that started creating the problem. Tried Safe
Mode and all the other solutions F8 offers but still no results.

Same thing happened to me. I have yet to find a fix, and also included this
problem in my post along with some other issues I have had with Vista.

I also have an HP Pavilion. It's a notebook, model dv2315nr

I got it around 3 days ago.

If I hear anything, or find a fix, or just an explanation, I will post it
here. I'm a bit relieved to know it's not just me.

I've been checking on a few Forums concerning Vista and seems our problem is
TOP OF THE LIST at the moment and HP seems to be the ceter of it all. They,
MicroS and HP have a serious problem.....

Will post any solution found.

I should mention that I didn't have any problems until after I had installed
the windows updates as well.

For me, when it went past the windows welcome screen, the one that is blue
and green, and says "Welcome to Windows..."

After that, when it should have gone to my desktop, it went to a black
screen. So I reset, and it did the black screen again.

On my third reset, I got the black screen. At the black screen, my mouse and
keyboard work. So, I pressed ctrl + alt + del and came to the green/blue
option screen, with the following options.

Lock this computer
Switch User
Log Off
Change a password
Start Task Manager

Cancel

I pressed cancel to get out of the options that popped up from pressing ctrl
+ alt + del, and my desktop loaded just fine, and I've had no problems since.

Knock on wood of course. Maybe it would help you as well =) I sure hope they
find a permanent fix soon.

Thank heavens I don't have an HP machine; it bad enough having an HP
Printer - even that doesn't work as it should with Vista:-)

Well, as I've already said before HP seem to have a serious
hardware/software problem when it gets to Vista.
I've been following quite a few Forums and HP are really in the middle of
all peoples hassles when it comes to Vista.
Had a long talk with HP assistance and got nowhere at all as they are just
as able as I am and have absolutely NO CLUE on how to resolve any of the
problems HP machines are having. Their best advice was to do a complete
format and try reloading the lot and then see if the problems comes
back.....very nice advice!

HP actually farm out technical support to a third party company. I've had
dealings with them before and got absolutely nowhere. You are quite right
they simply do not have a clue, but, when you think about it, re-installing,
gets you off the phone pretty quick and the tech support guys can go back to
sleep:-) I wonder if they know how to sleep, though? Or is it a case that
they have to pull up a page on their PC screen and follow a set of time
honoured steps of instruction?
