You need to own a genuine a licensed copy of Windows Vista. You purchase it
stores where software and computers are sold. Pirated versions of Windows
downloaded from the Internet are a certain risk since you can't gurantee
where its coming, meaning it could malicious code.

ALL Windoze boxes contain malicious code. It's the nature of the beast and
there is no way around it. AV software by its very nature is unable to keep
up with the new malware being put in the wild to attack Windoze boxes each
day. If your AV software hasn't found it yet, it's because its database of
KNOWN attacks hasn't yet been updated to handle the new attacks, and in
fact could NEVER keep up.

That being said ... you'll find the largest collection of software pirates
is within the Windoze community. That's another reason to choose open
source and Linux. The software is FREE and members of the Linux community
don't need to pirate software, nor have an interest in doing so.

Cheers.

yea, and also ironic, considering that's Microsft's attitude towards paying
customers.
why else would they force you to prove over and over and over again that you
are NOT a thief via their ridicuous activation schemes, ie; for something as
simple as downloading a device driver from Windows Update?

Crap. I've been running Vista Home Premium since 31st January, WITHOUT any
anti-virus software at all, and in fact no other security software
whatsoever apart from what comes "in the box". It is powered up all the
time and permanently connected to the Internet via a router.

It has remained absolutely clean as a whistle. No malware whatsoever.

How would you know? There are millions of computers controlled by bot
nets without the computer owner's knowledge. Root kits and spyware don't
exactly pop up and say, "hey look at me".

That is probably due to your experience, sadly that cannot be said for a
lot of users who simply lack knowledge. Third party protection is
basically "Foolproofing" and not really the same things as OS security
at all.

Same argument with UAC, which really is mostly foolproofing. These both
put security in the hands of the user / administrator and don't really
indicate the inherent security of the OS.
