Vista Laptop Does Not Load Websites

Hello,

I currently have an Acer Aspire 5100-5728 laptop with Windows Vista Home
Premium installed on it. After very many months of usage with no problems
pertaining to the internet, I am suddenly met with an inability to load
internet websites in an acceptable time. Other programs such as Pidgin
(Instant Messaging client) and uTorrent (BitTorrent client) that use the
internet work flawlessly; my download/upload and data transfer speeds are not
affected at all, and according to the Network and Sharing Center, I am
connected.

Anything in the browser bar, including my router setup, or the IP addresses
of websites, take anywhere from three to ten minutes to load; sometimes they
just fail to load entirely...this includes low-content pages such as Google,
Bash.org, and various other websites. I've tried both Mozilla Firefox and
Internet Explorer, and the problem is consistent. However, the problem is
only specific to my machine; I am currently typing this up on my parents'
Acer Aspire, connected to the same network, and websites load with no problem.

I've tried the following:
-Rebooting the machine
-Resetting the modem
-Unplugging the router
-Changing router settings
-Resetting the network settings
-Using wireless/wired
-Flushing the DNS
-Clearing the browser cache

I've also checked the Acer website, and it doesn't seem that there are any
driver updates or anything of the sort.

I can speculate that the problem is not with my ISP or any of the networking
hardware. The various other computers in my house (running Windows Vista,
Windows XP, and Ubuntu) all have full connectivity; it is only one Vista
laptop that has this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as being a prospective IT major, I am
completely baffled.

What about malware? Which antivirus program do you use? Have you done
a full scan?

What is your network activity while you are waiting for it to load?
Does it appear busy or is it idle?

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

You sure some non Vista compliant ActiveX control has been installed, used
by IE and has not caused problems?

I use ESET NOD32 Antivirus and Windows Defender. My Windows Firewall is off
all the time, and I temporarily disabled both NOD32 and Defender to no avail.

At the moment I am running scans, which hopefully can provide some insight.

As for waiting to load pages, everything is completely normal; there is
activity during the loading times. Again, I can find absolutely nothing

will take a look into this.

Unfortunately, I am unable to update Windows Defender (error code

looking into HiJack This and SpywareBlaster at the moment.

I was under the impression that ActiveX was unsupported in Mozilla Firefox
without a plug-in (which I do not have). The only instance where I have used
Internet Explorer, ever, since I last reformatted this machine a few weeks
ago, was when I was met with the issue I have hand here, and I tried to load
Google to see whether the issue was specific to Firefox or not. Mozilla
Firefox is my default browser.

If the problem was a malware-related issue, I would personally think that
internet speeds in all regards and for all programs (not just web browsing,
but Pidgin and uTorrent connectivity as well) would be affected. However,
both Pidgin and uTorrent connect and download faster than ever.

Both Windows Defender and NOD32 scans yielded nothing wrong. I have just
downloaded HiJack This and SpywareBlaster and will scan with these two
programs in the hopes that something will turn up.

Additionally, even attempting to get into my router setup
(http://192.168.1.1) gives me the same problem.

HiJack This doesn't seem to offer any insight whatsoever. I've checked and
double-checked the log file, and cannot find anything out of the ordinary.
Perhaps I missed something? I honestly have no clue.

Well, the fact that you can use Pidgin and Torrent shows that your
network is working and you can reach the Internet. The fact that you
cannot even reach router setup (http://192.168.1.1) is particularly
troubling. Normally, I would think that if you can't get to your
router, you aren't connected. But, other protocols (IM, BitTorrent) do
work.

It sounds as if http is disabled. I can't figure how that could
happen. Try opening %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (the file
has no extension) with notepad and paste the contents in a reply. I
can't figure how hosts could be corrupted barring malware, and I doubt
you have any. But, it is as if something is preventing both IE and FF.

What about your Internet Proxy Settings? These would affect both IE
and FF. Go to IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections Tab, LAN
Settings and clear the boxes under Automatic Configuration and Proxy
Settings.

Internet Proxy Settings are on and shouldn't be. IE, Tools, Internet
Options, Connections Tab, LAN Settings and clear the Proxy Settings -
says something like "Use a proxy server for your LAN..." or words like
that.

I greatly appreciate your help. I've posted this same problem on three or
four other forums and the like, and this is the only post that I'm receiving
any responses to.

My hosts file (sans the commented instructions) is default, I believe:

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

I just recently reformatted (about two or three weeks ago), so apart from
settings changes that I do after every reformat, nothing else is different.
My proxy settings are all fine.

I'd also like to reiterate that I CAN load websites, but the problem is that
said websites (including router setup) take upwards of three or four minutes
to load, which includes Google. Pages on my hard drive, not surprisingly,
are fine.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Yep. You're right. I got carried away. Hosts file looks perfectly
untouched, and it is NOT the Proxy Settings and http DOES work, just
slowly.

Still, very strange that even your router setup URL has the problem.
Packet errors, TCP/IP corrupted stack? These don't make sense because
you only just restored... I suppose that you could try restoring
again... hate to do that. Maybe updates are downloading? Clogging up
the pipes.

Start, 'Reliability and Performance Monitor'. What does your network
look like while you are idle? Is there hard drive activity while
idle?
