Vista laptop locks up with wired internet connection

My Toshiba A135 with Vista Home Premium regularly locks up (requiring power
down reset) when using a wired connection (typically in a hotel). Wireless
connection is always fine. The (built in) adapter is a Realtek RTL8101
Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC and the driver version is 6.186.1103.2006.
Any suggestions on what might cause this and what the cure might be?
