I have acer spire 5920G. Here is my problem. When I turn on the laptop vista
loads smoothly. For about 40 secs. desktop is shown but then it suddenly
stops loading for about 40 secs. and then it continue loading again. Is this
normal or what?
start and fully loading vista takes allmost 2 minutes whit this on-loading
hole.

Is all the 2nd and 3rd party software ( Acer & friends ) still running? Acer
and other laptop companies weigh down Windows with their own, for want of a
better word, cr*pware. Use the common techniques for turning off this stuff
[such as msconfig] and you may find booting up is quicker. Acer is
particularly awful [almost as bad as eMachines] for all the interferring and
meddling junk they load into Windows.

And I realize that when you look at msconfig.exe's Startup tab, the amount
of 2nd and 3rd party softwares running at boot can seem overwelming, but do
a System Restore first and then give some thought and take your time turning
some of them off.

Personally, I downloaded the appropriate-to-my-machine hardware drivers,
burn them to disc, wiped the harddrive clean and installed a generic copy of
Windows [whew .. much better] --- but I realize suchly isn't an option
considered by everyone.

My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how long it
takes to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is
otherwise satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about. Most
people start their computers once a day or even less frequently. In
the overall scheme of things, even a few minutes to start up isn't
very important. Personally I power on my computer when I get up in the
morning, then go get my coffee. When I come back, it's done booting. I
don't know how long it took to boot and I don't care.

I've never clocked it, but I'm sure it takes considerably more than
two minutes here, and I don't care at all.

Last year I checked out an economy eMachine at a big box store. I was a
proxy buyer, shopping for one of my clients. Anway, the eMachine had
"decent" specs, not stellar, certainly enough for a nice computer for many
of the things people like do do with laptops. Anyway, it almost choked while
booting. It took a long long time to boot and once booted was like a slug. I
thought that was odd so I snooped it right there in the store looking at
System Information and so on. When I checked the Startup tab of msconfig I
was amazed to find a list as long as my arm of 2nd and 3rd party software. I
figured the actual hardware was fine for my client, but the softwares
onboard made the thing unacceptable. So, it's not soley the boot. A slow
boot can just be indicative.

Yes, slow booting *can* be indicative of other problems. But please
note what I said in my original message quoted above: "Assuming that
the computer's speed is otherwise satisfactory, it may not be worth
worrying about." The operative words are "assuming that the computer's
speed is otherwise satisfactory."

If it is taking only 2 minutes for your Vista OS to boot up, you have no
problems. My Vista OS takes about 2 minutes to boot up and then the hard
drive light flashes on and off for a couple minutes as it sets up its
"housekeeping." Other than that, my Vista runs faster than my XP's.

Sometimes after a System Restore or loading up a big software package the
disc drive does its blinking show for up to 10 minutes after Visat boots up,
as it rearranges its new "housekeeping."

As Ken has stated, if your machine is running fast during the day (and the
disc drive isn't blinking continously like a disco strobe) then the start up
time should be no concern. 2 minutes is very reasonable.

What are you, some kind of master of the escape clause ?!! ha ha

Yup, you are right. But if relatively new laptop takes too long to boot ..
something's up. It may be just too much junk is loading .. but there's
something. My acer 5100 takes 50 seconds .. including my typing in to log-in
pwrd ... to a full desktop.

Anyway, have a nice Monday, Mr. Blake.
