Vista locks at "Shutting Down..."

I often have a problem with Vista not being able to shut down; it hangs
and locks on the "Shutting down..." screen. It sometimes gets so badly
hung that I have to unplug the computer, which I know is awful to do. I
don't have other problems with Vista.

When I tell Vista to restart, it works fine.

Any thoughts as to what may be causing this lockup?

Look at the performance center it should give you some indication to what's
going wrong

If an improperly written program is not releasing at shutdown, and does so
consistently, you have to choose as to whether you want to keep that program
and live with the hardship.

Use the Event Viewer to try to find what is causing the shutdown problem.
Then, look for an update to that program or uninstall the program to rid
yourself of the problem.

Number 1 cause would be a service or application refusing to close. The
time-out in Windows Vista for an application to close is fairly long
which is why it probably 'eventually' shuts down but takes 'a while'.

The easiest resolution would be to try to determine which
application/service is causing the slowdown. To do so, I'd recommend to
you the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe).
Go to your start menu, use the start search features and type in the
start search box 'msconfig' and hit enter. You'll see two tabs you'll
wanna visit. The 'Startup' and 'Services'. Try clicking on services,
click on 'Hide All Microsoft Services' checkmark box <<---- Important
and then choose Disable all. Next click on startup and choose disable
all.

Try restarting your pc and shutdown. If it shutdown fine, it shows its
a software issue and not related to hardware.
You can then try to re-enable your services, restart, try shutting down
again. If the problem re-occurs, its a service. If the problem doesn't
reoccur, it shows its likely a start up application.
You can then try to re-enable half the startup applications, restart,
try shutting down again. If the problem re-occurs, its one of those half
of the services. If the problem doesn't reoccur, it shows its likely one
of the services you didn't renable.
Repeat enabling half over and over till you find out what 1 application
it is.
