Vista Locks While Entering Password

Running Vista Home Premium 32bit oh a Gateway laptop

The system boots up to the login screen. If I just let it sit there th
cursor will flash like usual. If I try to enter the password, the syste
locks up. It's a hard lock, and I have to hold down the power button t
shut it off

If I boot to a Linux live CD, everything works fine. When I mount th
hard drive, I can access all the data on it. No lockups

What would cause Vista to lock when entering the password

Dunno, but you could try getting in in 'safe mode'. Tap f8 soon after
booting for the advanced boot menu

Yeah, it won't go into safe mode at all, just reboots. I did a startup
repair, but that didn't help. I have discovered; if I let it sit for
about 20 minutes, it will go to a black screen, then back to the login.

I'm going to do a wipe and reload.
