I'm in a LOOP.

I have a Windows Media Center PC (Dell 5100). I'm trying to upgrade to
Windows Vista and am having a major problem. Note I do not want to do a
"Clean Install" unless I must.

After inserting my Vista CD in the drive the Install Windows screen comes
up. I select the Install Now option. Choose the Get Updates, enter my
Product Key and press next. I accept the license terms and choose the
Upgrade option..

I get a Compatibility Report that says I need to remove my Symantec and
Norton applications ver 2006 and lower (mine is 2005).

I go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and try to do that but get
another message that says LiveUpdate or AutoLiveUpdate is running. If it is
I can't find it.

I seem to be in a loop where I can't remove my Symantec program until I get
rid of LiveUpdate which I can't find. I even tried to just REMOVE the Whole
Folder but couldn't do that either.

Is there a Utility that I can use to remove these programs so I can install
Vista?

Thanks, Mick

Hi Mick--

It would have helped me help you if you had been precise and stated exactly
what Norton software you have:

"my Symantec and Norton applications ver 2006 and lower (mine is 2005)"

There is a manual uninstall and a tool that is updated every year that can
be used to remove Norton whatever you have. I know you have Antivirus but
I didn't see where you said exactly how you have it (i.e. standalone, NIS,
or NSW).

Yes there is. It seems a bit absurd that Vista is signalling anything about
Norton, but since it is, I am hopeful that if you uninstall all of your
Norton applications that will take care of this problem.

1) Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility: It will
help you get a complete, clean uninstall of Norton.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

2) Can you not uninstall Norton from Add/Remove? You weren't clear about
trying. I know you took a shot at the Symantec folder but there are 2-3 in
more than one location. You attempted to do a "partial removal" which isn't
good with any Norton product.

3) Run a chkdsk /r on your box. That's "R" for Redmond because it includes
all other functions of chkdsk.

4)

Links for Manual Uninstalls of Norton Components:

Download and Use the Norton Removal Tool

I could find manual removal instructions for Norton 2003 and earlier but
someone should tell John Thompson at Symantec that it's 2007. They have
been particularly reprehensible at updating their kinowledge base or ever
organizing it and they removed them from their site. Fortunately I used to
help with eternally perenially always buggy Norton so I have them:

Delete folders from c:\Program files\Norton Anti Virus or Symantec
Delete folders from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
Delete all entries in this directory Start> Run>%temp%
Empty the recycle bin if not already empty because you use shift+delete like
I do.

Open registry and back it up via File>Export>entire registry>location of
your choice.

Go to H_KEY_Classes_Root> find and delete all Symantec references.
Go to H_KEY_Current_User and find and delete all Software/Symantec
references.
Go to H_KEY_Local Machine and find and delete all Software/Symantec
references
Go to H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and at System/Current Control Set>look for any
entries with lower case ccEvtMgr, ccSetMgr, ccProxy, ccPwdSvc (delete these
entries)
H_KEY_USERS/Software/Symantec (delete this entry).

That's one more reason I recommend to people to use Windows One Care.

Good luck--post back if you can't uninstall it and successfully install
Vista after doing this.

I used the link you provided and it looks like it worked. After I ran the
program and did a reboot I went into Add/Remove and could not find any part
of the program. So it looks good.

I can't install Vista tonight because it's late and so I'll hit it tomorrow
for sure.

Thanks for your help.

Mick--

After many Norton uninstalls (with their tools) 60-70% of the time, you'll
still have many registry values and many folders left if you know where to
look for them. The tool is usually not enough and I provided you with what
you will need if it's not.
