A Microsoft Rep. that was in the development team that answered tech support
calls during the Beta Testing for Vista mentioned to me that the so called
"Start Button" is not called the start button in Vista. It is called the
Pearl!

Did anyone else know this?

Yes, another less common name is "Orb".

I thought it was called the "Orb", That is assuming you stay in Aero mode.
Back in classic mode it looks just like the Start Menu to me.

But a Google seems to confirm, it's being called a pearl

Yes. Noted in our AW review:
http://www.activewin.com/reviews/sof...ta/index.shtml

It was also called Orb, its surprising how long the pearl has been around,
been seeing it since WinHEC '05.

its called the Perl, and I know it...

the whole idea is revolting.

I have written a small joke here scenario here. Imagine a tech support
problem.

-----ON XP----
-Press start.
-Done.. next?

---ON VISTA----
-Hello, tech support, how may I help you?
-Hi! I have a problem here with my screen, everything looks huge!
-That is easy to fix Sir. Go to start, then to control panel then to....
-Wait wait! Where is start? I don't see anything start here.
-There is no start button? You are using Windows PC are you not?
-Of course I am!!! Why did you think I called Microsoft in the first
place...
-Ahhhh.. perhaps you have then bought our new operating system called Vista!
-I don't know what Vista is.. I just went to a shop and bought a computer..
it does look different... kinda dark and evil to me!
-Ok then Sir press the Perl.
-What perl???? I dont see any perls here anywhere!
-The round thing in the corner that has a flag on it.
-What flag?
-It looks like a thing with 4 colors in it red yellow blue and green.
-Thats a Flag????? And thats a Perl??? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!

:-) Vista is STUPID for removing the writing from such a basic element. XP
had a reason for making the
button green and writting START on it. It was fool proof.
Now vista is a fool in itself! (yeah I know that in classic you still have a
start button..... but now the tech
support has to explain how to change from aero to classic! lol)

Um, the irony is that one has to click on the Start button to turn the
computer off.

Oh vista made it even WORSE... now the apparent OFF button does not really
turn vista off...
rather it sets it into SLEEP mode.... a low power state.

To turn it off you have to see that small arrow thing on the right and
press that to see the other options.

FRIKIN HORRIBLE GUI DESIGN if you ask me!

Its a wonder how MS was able to condense so many stupid mistakes, into one
start menu!

It needs talent for such stupidity!

Kirk Jim, that button can be configured. On my machine, the default setting
was to turn the computer off, not to sleep it or hibernate it.
I know I saw a setting for changing it, but I forget where. Maybe it was in
the area that lets you change power schemes.
But at any rate, I didn't have to change it because, as I said above, on my
machine that button turns it off.

Indeed you are right... it can be configured..from the power options
(By the way they made that too a very bad and non user friendly design)
but how many people know that it is possible,
and how many people will find the information,
and how many people will know the difference or even think of it...
and how many people.......I can go on but you get the drift....

its a big list :-)

Why do MS still reference it as the start button? Go to windowsupdate.com
and look at their terminology.

Hold you mouse of your so called pearl and look what appears.. Start!
