Im finding many of the options do not work, where as in XP they do work.

Maybe its the increased security in Vista.

Most important aspect is the event viewer part. I get unable to connect to
computer, network path not found ?

Computer management works ok and am presented with the pc options but when i
click event viewer get the above error.

Anyone supporting Vista (lol), can you try and anyone got any
recommendations.

Yep all patches for 2003 / vista applied.... even SP2...;-), no real issues
at this site except VPN will not allow more than one connection but thats on
a wishlist for later (have found this issue on another site also, not
applied the VPN patches as that seems a bit much and scared it will break
something else.)

Hello POP,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you join a Vista client to
SBS domain, but you get error message "The network path was not found" when
you run the Manage computer option from SBS Console to view vista's event
log. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me
know.

Based on my research, the Vista is a new client OS and it is still has some
compatible issue with SBS 2003. I suggest we try the following steps to see
if we can resolve this issue:

1. Please install the following hotfix on SBS:
Update for Windows Small Business Server 2003: Windows Vista and Outlook
2007 compatibility (KB 926505)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...1E4-1B2C-471B-
A284-E0C8C169FAC3&displaylang=en

2. Please ensure you have correct join vista to SBS domain

a. On SBS, open Server Management console->Client Computers

b. Click Set Up Client Computer link in right panel, create a computer
account in SBS domain for Vista client.

c. On Vista, access the http://SBSname/connectcomputer/, run the wizard to
join the Vista client to SBS domain.

3. If the issue persists, please check the IP configuration on Vista.
Please ensure the Vista is a DHCP client and get IP from SBS.

4. Do you install some 3rd-party software on the Vista? Pease try to
disable them and have a test.

5. Please try to disable the windows firewall on vista and then test this
issue.

If we can not resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Can you access Vista share folder from SBS?

2. Do you get any error message on the SBS or Vista?

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

POP,

Unlike XP, the "Remote Registry" service is not set to "Automatic" startup
on Vista. If you start the service manually on the target PC then you should
find that you are able to use Computer Management remotely. Obviously if this
is an ongoing requirement you will need to reconfigure your Vista clients
accordingly.

Presumably MS have changed this as a result of a security concern, if anyone
has any thoughts on "best practice" in handling the remote registry service
I'd be interested to hear them...

Hi Duncan... you hit the nail on the head... that was the issue we found and
we are back in our labs to see if this is due to vista joining the domain
before the patches came out for vista / sbs2003 or is the default settings
on vista.

Terence, thank you for your comprehensive post but we found the issue was
solved by what Duncan mentioned, even though performance and logs is
presented with 'The operating system is newer than this (server) this
operation is not available'.... ;-)

Hi Terence, yes all working now, just added a GPO to start it on all Vista.

Would be nice to know if this was a security issue and Microsoft turned it
off... or was it an oversight... ;-) If a security issue some notes would be
great.

Hello POP,

Thank you for kind update.

This is by-design, and it is not an oversight. As we know, the Vista is
more security than XP, and the Vista system will often be used in laptop
device, and many users will use Vista at home without join domain.
Therefore, by default, the Remote Registry service is set to Manual.
However, when you join the Vista client in Windows 2003 domain, we may use
this service, so you can manually start it.

When the Vista client join domain, it must be in internal network, started
Remote Registry service will not drop your security level. Please don't
worry.

Hope the info will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Hi Terence, should of made my self clearer...

In XP and Vista stand alone Remote registry is Manual by default.

As SBS console has manage computers then assume GPO for XP has this switched
on to allow XP remote registry.

SBS Patches add GPO for VISTA but comparing the two (boy what a difference
Vista GPO is to XP...lol) many settings for VISTA GPO does not have the same
as XP, more so the manage computer options. My personal belief is the Vista
GPO has some key elements missing, mistake from Microsoft...lol. We had to
make many changes in GPO to allow manage computers work from SBS console to
Vista.

Thank you for your continued participation in this NG.

Hello POP,

Thank you for your reply.

In newsgroup, we only handle the technology issue. For why the Vista be
designed like this, we do not know very clearly. Maybe there will be some
update for this in further, but I'm not sure.

Meanwhile, the Vista is designed for the client OS for Longhorn (Windows
server 2008), maybe this is the root cause of why there are so many
different between XP.

I understand that this limitation may inconvenience our users and we
apologize for the inconvenience you faced. In our efforts to continue to
improve our products, you are welcome to add your suggestions in
Partnerfeedback newsgroup to make Microsoft products easier and more
powerful to use. Thanks for your understanding.

Submitting suggestions for product enhancement:

Legitimate Wishes fit into the following guidelines:

Enhancement or feature addition to existing Microsoft products
Reproducible problem or bug with current version that needs resolution
Cannot find documentation of feature within the help files
Difficulty using the product
All beta products
Product packaging complaints
Added accessibility feature for a Microsoft product
These can be submitted here:

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

| Hi Terence, should of made my self clearer...
|
| In XP and Vista stand alone Remote registry is Manual by default.
|
| As SBS console has manage computers then assume GPO for XP has this
switched
| on to allow XP remote registry.
|
| SBS Patches add GPO for VISTA but comparing the two (boy what a
difference
| Vista GPO is to XP...lol) many settings for VISTA GPO does not have the
same
| as XP, more so the manage computer options. My personal belief is the
Vista
| GPO has some key elements missing, mistake from Microsoft...lol. We had
to
| make many changes in GPO to allow manage computers work from SBS console
to
| Vista.
|
| Thank you for your continued participation in this NG.
