Is Vista Media Center in the stone age?

Hi,

I recently moved to a small community on Vancouver Island, an independent
principality off the coast of the Dominion of Canada. I can receive four
1080i HDTV signals using amplified HDTV rabbit ears from Radio Shack. I have
a Hauppauge WinTV (HVR 1250). WinTV is able to detect and record OTA HDTV
signals. On the contrary, Vista Media Center TV Setup is unable to detect an
OTA signal. When I specify that I use an antenna, it only knows about analog
and not DTV. The guide that is downloaded does not list any DTV channels.

Will this be fixed any time soon?

Since this is a function of your Hauppauge capture card and not Vista; it
might be better to talk to Hauppauge. Media Center can't even receive analog
broadcast without third party hardware and software. This is by design, or
didn't you know that. What did you expect?

I'm not understanding your meaning, Mark. Using the Hauppauge WinTV adapter
interface and device/ driver, Vista Media Center can detect cable signals.
The cable TV guide is then correct. WinTV can detect OTA digital signals.
However, Vista Media Center, using the same Hauppauge WinTV adapter
interface and device/ driver, is unable to detect any OTA digital TV signal
only analog. The guide then only lists a small number of analog only TV
signals. I'm not interested in analog, only DTV and HDTV.

I don't use cable currently. I have all the latest Vista updates including
the most recent updates for the Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1250 device driver from
Microsoft update. Yet Vista Media Center still has no knowledge of OTA
digital TV signals.

Given that the Hauppauge device driver came from Microsoft, and that the
Hauppauge WinTV application can detect and record OTA HDTV, I am at a loss
to grasp why you claim the problem is due to Hauppauge.

BTW, For the sake of other readers I cannot recommend downloading device
drivers, except from Microsoft update. When I have tried device driver
update downloads from Hauppauge or from nVidia I have been screwed royally.
They do not work and crash my PC.
