Greetings!
Newbie here!
Anyway, here's the question, just had a new computer built and it's
running Vista Ultimate. Here's the thing, its got two Corsair 2gb memory
sticks thus 4gb. When the installation finished it displayed in the
welcome centre 2.5gb! Once I installed Service Pack one it displayed
4gb. Vista Manager shows 2 x 2gb sticks, Welcome Centre shows 4Gb but
any memory monitor (sidebar gadget and MemInfo) shows 2557mb. The
motheboard is a Gigabyte with the latest stuff installed and I'm using
an Intel Core 2 Duo processor all nestled next to a XFX 8800GS graphics
card, why does software show 2.5gb?

Hope you can help!

Before SP1, Vista showed the actual amount of RAM free for its own use. SP1
enables the full 4gb to be seen, but the usage is still limited to 4gb minus
the motherboard/video resources, which in your case is 2.5gb

The graphics card does have its own memory, but a 32 bit
OS has only 4GB of memory addresses available, and the
video card and other system hardware share those
addresses with the OS. If your video card has 512MB of
RAM, you're down to 3.5GB before even considering the
other hardware requirements.

I have a 512MB video card and have looked at several that are now available
with 1GB on the card...
If you're a rabid gamer, it helps with the frame rates, but unless you run
64 bit it does cut down on the memory available for the OS/Programs.
