Vista networking with XP

I currently have 6 PCs networking with Windows XP in my office. However, one
PC is needed to replace. If the new PC bought is with Windows Vista Home
Edition, it is possible to be networking to the existing PCs with Windows XP ?

if you want Vista either the business or ultimate edition is better for
networking.
You can go to dell and still order machines with xp home or pro.

Thanks BigJim, however, a HP PC loaded with Vista Home Edition was ordered,
it is possible to link the PCs in the networking or need to shift to XP pro
or Vista Business ?

I Network XP Pro and Vista Home Premium via a Workgroup.
You need vista Business or ultimate for a Domain.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and
passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you
have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer.

Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in
Start >All Programs >Accessories >Communications), and tell the Wizard to
enable File and Printer Sharing.
Or > Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a Home or Small
Office Network.

Yes, it works fine. But remember to give the Vista machine the same
workgroup name, otherwise you'll be scratching your head for hours!

Yes, no problem at all. I do exactly that here.

Is the network a workgroup or a domain?

If it's a workgroup, any version of Vista will work fine. If it's a
domain, you'll need Vista Business or Ultimate.

Is there some way I can make my XP machines automagically log into the
Vista file sharing? I've tried using an XP account name & password
identical to the one used for the Vista sharing account, but it
doesn't automatically log in.

If I try to look at the Vista subdirectory from XP it first brings up
the login panel asking for the account name and password, then when I
give it that manually all is ok from then on.

Between XP machines I can set it up so they automatically log into
each other to transfer files. I'd like to do the same from XP to
Vista.

No, but I'm not trying to look at network topology maps from Vista.
I'm trying to have XP autolog into a Vista sharing account. Is the
LLTD in some way related?

There's nothing I see on that web page which says LLTD does anything
but show me a graphical view of the network topology. And I know the
network is connected properly because it all works. It just doesn't
auto log int from XP.

Am I missing something?

I don't think Vista likes XP.
Have you tried setting up accounts on both machines with the same
username/password?
