Vista never shuts down properly

We recently brought a laptop with Vista Home and have had on goin
issues with it not shutting down. Everytime we hit shut down it goes t
the logging off screen but never actually makes it. We have left i
running over night and come down the next morning and its still "loggin
off"! We have tried the Ctrl Alt Del combination to see whats causin
the issues but the task manager doesnt load up. This has been an ongoin
issue for about 3 weeks and have probably only had the laptop for
month.

Forceably switching it off, which we have to, causes the safety mod
prompt to come on at the next start up. If we do not run the safety mod
we arent able to use the internet as it doesnt connect. So, running i
in safety mode is the only way to get things back to normal. I shoul
add that when I start up in safety mode it goes to a black scree
eventually with "safety mode" written in each corner. Ive no idea how t
move away from this so just hit the main off button but we can get bac
on the net when it reboots

Having read a few issues with shutting down it doesnt appear tha
anyone has the ongoing issue we do and as mentioned Ctrl Alt Del doe
nothing. On the rare occasion we have got it to shut down properly i
reverts the next time. We run McAfee anti virus and as a fairly ne
laptop there isnt much that we have downloaded since purchase. I als
have a desktop and never experienced this ongoing issue

Please can you offer some advice but please keep the jargon to
minimum and give it to me in laymans terms

Hi,

The problem, simply put, is that one or more running processes is not
responding to the terminate signal sent when a system is shut down. The
solution is to isolate this process by selectively disabling that which runs
in the background. If it did not happen initially (out of the box), then
suspect something you installed (P2P file sharing and chat programs are
common culprits), and it's also possible that updates done to preinstalled
programs - especially including antivirus software - could be the problem.

Use the system configuration utility (click start and type msconfig, then
hit <enter>) in selective startup mode and start by disabling some of the
programs on the startup tab. If you try disabling the antivirus software,
make sure to disable associated services as well (on the service tab, check
the box to hide microsoft services to make them easier to find). It will
take some trial and error to find out which one is causing the problem, but
these steps should allow you to figure it out.

This happens when you have a program that is running in a loop. It ma
be one of your startup programs. I recommend you make a test and disabl
all startup programs to see what happens then. If it works normall
without the startup programs, you have to reenable them one by one t
find the culprit
There are many ways to manage the startups. I prefer WinPatrol becaus
it is neat. 'BillP Studios' (http://www.winpatrol.com/

Along with what Rick replied, if this is a new laptop, contact the
manufacturer for support. This may be a problem with a missing driver, or a
driver that needs updating, that their support is familiar with. If the
laptop is out of warranty, check their web support for references to this
problem.
