I hope I'm posting in the correct thread..

My laptop is an Asus F3tc, running Vista Home Premium as it's sole OS
When I booted it this evening, for some inexplicable reason, it refuse
to load Vista, returning the error message

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might b
the cause." (etc...

I subsequently inserted the Vista Recovery DVD and launched Syste
Repair, whichn advised running System Restore which I did (restorin
from an automatic checkpoint last night. However, this was unsuccessful
the failure attributed to an I/O device error (0x8007045D)

I am aware that this problem has been reported in the past, and tha
apparently satisfactory solutions have been suggested within the Vist
interface. Unfortunately, I obviously have no access to this interface
and thus, am at a loss

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Try opening the cdrom when you boot.

In my experience Windows recovery discs are useless if you are relying on
automated functions like restoring the master boot record and do not
possess major skills that allow you to manually delete and rewrite or
reinstall the MBR or specific OS files.
The best use of the recovery discs is a reinstall of the OS but that will
wipe your data.
Options:
When you start the computer hold down the f8 key to get to the boot menu and
see if you can boot into safe mode, with networking if possible so you have
that option to offload data from the laptop.
If you can boot into safe mode before you do anything else, if you have not
already done so, copy all your vital documents, images, whatever because
your problem may be due to a major component like a failing hard drive.
If you are technically inclined you can remove the hard drive and put it in
the appropriate enclosure and see if you can read the data on the drive from
another computer. You can also software test the hard drive that way.
If you are in safe mode and have backups then see if there is a usable
system restore point from before your troubles started and see if returning
there works for you. Don't be too optimistic: system restore is a great idea
but it's a crap shoot whether it will actually work when you need it.
If system restore does not work then go to the system applet (in safe mode)
in control panel and uninstall your video driver. Uninstall/disable (via
msconfig) any and all unnecessary startup programs, like antivirus, Itunes,
etc etc. Be ruthless.
I would run software memory and hardware tests before going any further.
If you cannot boot into safe mode and are unable to externalize the drive to
read its contents your only option is to try reinstalling the OS which will
likely wipe out the data on your hard drive, depending on the way you store
things.

Thanks for your advice. I ran checkdisk yesterday, and Vista is no
booting successfully

Unfortunately, my computer is now refusing to connect to wireles
networks. When I ask Windows to diagnose and repair the problem,
receive the message "Windows Wireless Service is not running on thi
computer", and when I select the option "Start Windows Wireles
Service", I am informed that "Windows cannot resolve the problem"
Online research revealed that this problem should be able to be resolve
by starting the Windows service WLAN AutoConfig (assuming al
dependencies are running - in my case, they are). When I attempt t
start this service, however, I receive the following error message

"Windows could not start the WLAN AutoConfig service on Local Computer

Error 1747: The authentication service is unknown.

Does anyone know of a way around this

(I have backed up all my important files, but I would rather avoi
reinstallation if possible.
