Vista will not run memory test on boot

Hi
I am runing windows vista 32 and it is actualy running ok for me
thought I just tryed to run a memory test and found that it runs up to
about half or what i have then it starts over. It will do this till i
get tired of watching and jump back in to my bios and tell it to run the
fast test witch dose not run any real test. Then the comp will boot
fine and run ok. I would really like to know how to get it to run a
real mem test so i can check my systems memory. I had a problem a wile
back where my main board desided to over clock my memory on its own and
thought it is now runing ok i want to make sure it did not damaged the
memory. I already found that it had damaged my FX card and had to
replace it. If anyone has any ideas that would be great.

Check each memory module, one maybe bad.

Get an actual memory testing program. There are many free ones out there.

I was told by a freind to down load a none windows memory test but i
just wanted to make sure that i was not missing something. It would
seem that i will have to go that route.

You were having the bios test your memory. There is a memory tester built
into every version of Vista that works as well as MemTest - the one that
most everyone knows. Try it.

That being said the only real way to test the memory is with a hardware
memory tester. The RAM is removed from the computer and inserted into the
tester. The RAM is tested under load. It is not a static test that MemTest
does. These testers cost hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Expecting a software test to do what these hardware testers to do is
foolish.

Well short of buying the thousand dallor memory tester I got the free
online test insted. (Memtest86) It worked good and was able to run a
full test twice. Note to Richard Urban that I tryed many times to run
the memtest that windows cam with and it would not run which is why I
was looking for a different way to do that same thing. In the end my
memory tested good and I am back to the fast test that my comp dose
every time it starts up. Thanks all for the help.

The fast test that a computer does when it boots up has absolutely
**NOTHING** to do with the memory test that is supplied along with the
operating system. The test that you are referring to is completed by the
computer bios. It is built into the motherboard hardware. The test I am
referring to is built into the operating system and is run independent of
anything that the bios does.

For you to think that these are the same test is incorrect.

Sorry for the confusion I guess I was thinking of the bios test. I do
have the non windows one and it worked ok but for my own info If you
could give me an idea of where it would go to find it. I am a man of
over kill and if you saw what I put in this comp for very simple games
then you would either shake you head or just give a high five. Eather
way I know a lot about hard ware in anything but the software thing is
not my field. (I built my comp my self but had to have a friend put a
OS on it).

Start | Search | Memory

You will see an entry for memory diagnostics utility. When you go through
the steps you reboot to run the test before the operating system starts up
the next time.
