Vista will not sleep automatically

My PC will not sleep automatically.

The screen turn off but the PC never powers down.

If I use the sleep button to make the PC sleep it works fine.

What is the difference between auto sleep and sleep via a button on the PC?

The machine used to work fine and now it has just stopped for some reason.

I have latest bios and patches installed and even I i disable all startup
apps using msconfig, it still will not sleep automatically! The identical
PC sitting next to it works fine.

Check in Control Panel -> System and Maintainence -> Power Options -> Change
when the computer sleeps -> Change advanced power settings -> Multimedia
settings. From here you can allow the computer to sleep, not sleep, or not
idle to sleep.

Another reason why its no longer idling to sleep is because you've got files
open across the network.

Paul, I have checked those settings and the PC is alowed to sleep.

If I re-boot the PC and do not open any files or share anythig is still does
not work.

Any more suggestions?

Same. Screen turns off but it does not power down.

Hi Paul:
I was having the same problem and ran into a solution that worked for me
in the newsgroup somewhere. I don't remember what I changed but can tell you
what settings I have in Power Management that fixed my Vista Home Premium pc
problem with not going to sleep with the sleep button and after waking up to
record tv programs. If you type Power Options in the search field on the
start menu and click that, then click " Change plan settings">Change
advanced power settings then expand "Sleep" then expand "Hybrid Sleep" and
make sure it reads "On". Then expand "Multimedia Settings", expand "When
sharing media". Next to "Setting" you have a choice of "Allow the computer
to enter Away Mode", "Allow the computer to sleep", and "Prevent idling to
sleep". Mine is set at "Allow the computer to enter Away Mode". I changed
one of those settings and my pc now goes to sleep when I hit the sleep button
and after waking up to record it goes back to sleep as it should. I can't
tell you which one I changed but if you set yours the same it should go to
sleep.
I do have my pc set to go to sleep after 15 mins under the "Sleep" settings
but I think it was already set for that. I hope this helps you.

Hi again Paul:
Forgot to mention, I don't think the setting changes took effect until
the next time I re-started the pc. Clicking sleep didn't work after I made
the change but did after the next re-start.

Hi, for what it's worth, after such a long time, I had the same problem, screen went black but no sleep automatically, and I checked all the power options. Now it seems it was because of the bluetooth program bluesoleil, when the program is off the computer goes to sleep without a problem.
