Vista will not stay asleep !

I started having this problem a while ago and I think the Windows
updates caused it because it was working before.

When I put my Pavilion HP DV6000 laptop to sleep (hibernation) it
wakes up by itself few minutes later. Often I have to remove the
battery in order to prevent draining the battery during the night. I
have disabled all USB and Network devices' ability to wake up the
computer from sleep state to no avail. It insists to wake up by
itself without touching anything.

Additional info: I checked the event log and the first entry before
the wake up is a WARNING from DHCP-Client process as follows:

"Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network
(from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address
0019D22E9084. The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user.. Your computer will continue
to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address
(DHCP) server."

Event ID: 1003

I searched in MS Knowledge base about this but none of the solutions
helped. I am very frustrated and wondering if anyone else is having
this issue and if there is a workaround for it. Thank you ...

Hi,

Instead of devices, concentrate on installed software that is running in the
background. This would include antivirus/antispyware applications. Try
selectively disabling them until the system goes into and stays in hibernate
mode.

FWIW, I use the same laptop with Vista HP installed and have no issues
whatsoever getting it to hibernate and I did not have to modify any hardware
settings to do it.

Hi SacredHeart

You might check with this tutorial to see if it can help you with you
computer waking up. In addition to the other steps, I would check t
make sure that the "Wake On..." options in the BIOS and Network devic
was set as disabled

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63...e-problems.htm

Hope this helps

I have disabled all non essential startup items. Still no luck. One
interesting info I have is that, if I remove the battery for a few
seconds and re-install it, it wont wake up. I am guessing a program
is installing some interrupt in the timer (CMOS clock?) which wakes up
the computer and if the battery is removed that information is
possibly lost. This is only a guess at this point so I am not totally
sure what is waking up from Hibernation state. If I remember correctly
S4 state still uses some very minimal power and removing the battery
negates that...

I have seen other posts regarding this issue so I think I am not the
only one... Thanks for the help.

Go in Windows Task Manager, Processes tab and look in the PID (Process ID)
column for 1668. If PID is not enabled, do so in View/Select columns...
check Process ID checkbox.
Take it from there or post back with what that process is - seems different
on each machine.

I checked it, it was Diagnostic Policy Service among others like
Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine . I disabled the DPS
service and will see if it helps. Thanks for suggestions.

Still no luck. I checked all the startup programs. Nothing other
than basic OS and laptop specific stuff whiche were there to begin
with. This thing started around mid July. I am definitely thinking
it's caused by some Windows update and/or combination with HP
updates? The event log has nothing that really gives me an indication
on what is causing the wake up. I disabled several services I chan
think of. No help. Getting really frustrated. MS should look into
this problem as I am not the only one seeing this issue !
