To Vista or not to Vista?

Right now, I have a Dell XPS 410, about a year old, with 1 GB RAM, running XP
(if any of that matters).

I got a Vista upgrade but have just had it sitting here, not bothering to
install it because of things I've seen posted in different places about
bugginess, compatibility, and other issues.

I'm getting an Office Pro Vista/2007 upgrade, so the question I have is
whether it's worthwhile installing Vista now and if so, how much RAM do I
need to have? How big a headache am I in for if I upgrade to Vista?

Any insights and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only fly in the ointment about going from XP to Vista on a laptop is
the video RAM. If you don't have at least, at least 128megs, then don't
do it.
If you do then bump the sys RAM up to at least 2gigs and you should be
fine.
Back up your important data and do a clean install. Do all of the
updates, install anti-virus and then your other apps. You may need to
install some of them using compatibility mode.
Other than that, you should be good to go.

I have an XPS410 bought with Vista home premium, 2GB memory. I am quite
happy.
You need 1 GB, you will be happier with 2GB.

Need to upgrade? Not so sure about that, if you are happy now why bother?
Office 2007 should work just fine in XP.

I am a fan of Vista, not such a fan for upgrading. If you decide to upgrade
be sure to update your BIOS first, there have been several updates/fixes
since I bought mine and you should be up-to-date in the BIOS.

If you start up your upgrade DVD it will run a compatibility check and
report what it finds as problems. Even if it doesn't report problems that
is not a guaranty that things will go smoothly.

Yeah, I thought this was a minimum, so I'll take a look at this.

Maybe that's the answer. If Office 2007 runs fine in XP, and this would be
my primary motivator, I'm not sure I'm into the whole upgrade process. I
believe that Frank is right when he talks about a clean install, but that
seems monumental to me right now given how much crap I have on my computer
now and how little time I have to devote to a "project" like this. Thanks for
the practical side of this.

Sounds like a plan to me unless someone else has something compelling on
this to make it worth the hassle.

What are the specs of your laptop? Specifically, what CPU does it use,
and how much memory does it have?

the min is 512mb

vista really needs a vistabyte of ram, that is 10 in the power of googolplex
bytes of ram.

or 1 vistabyte is 10^10^10^100 bytes

Call your parole officer and tell him that your ankle bracelet needs to be
tightened.

You are a mental retard. Just FYI
