Bill, these people are just trolling. EVERY OS has problems, but Vista
has different ones than others. Refusing to accept these problems is
moronic, they need to be fixed not, "Imagined" out of the way.
My personal view is that problems with Explorer should have been fixed a
long time ago and should never have got into the released version. WGA /
WPA cause users to have problems they neither need nor deserve and their
effectiveness is not sufficient to justify the problems they cause.
"If" these people had to deal with more than one machine - with which
they may simply have been lucky - they would not be making such claims.
They are not quoting from experience, rather from lack of it
I think from the original release Vista has been improved by the various
updates, and the hardware folks have caught up somewhat too, but MS need
to do more before it becomes the kind of stable environment that XP has
become and be widely accepted by the IT industry. The fact is though
that many business requirements are satisfied by XP and existing
hardware with the extra investment for Vista showing limited returns.
Quality is, in my view, even more critical to the adoption than before.
Calling users like yourself (and me) "Morons" does not help MS or Vista
or anybody else, trying to help find a fix does. I have trouble with
some machines, none at all with other machines, but in the end when
basic OS functions like listing, copying, processing files don't work,
or work unpredictably (Which can be worse than not at all) it hits MS's
reputation right in the balance sheet. No use then Ballmer clowning
about on stage, people will not be fooled forever.
I've been an MVP for some years and like MS and their products, however
Vista was a disappointment to me when I looked at it from a normal
user's viewpoint and harder to deal with than it could have been.
Previous experimentation with Linux (Mostly Debian) showed that for many
users Linux was still too "Geeky", but the open source teams have made
vast improvements to the GUI so that being a Geek is no longer
necessary, and in fact an install of Ubuntu goes faster and easier than
Vista with FEWER driver and compatibility issues than Vista. Sure you
have to make a few changes, just as you would with XP / Vista but it is
no longer difficult, it's just not enough "Windows like" to be a natural
for a former XP user. Thing is though, that MS have to realize, someone
like me can replace XP or Vista for MOST home users with Ubuntu and
unless they use windows only games they will have all they had before
and less hassles. That is why I think building hassles into the system
is dangerous for MS. It's no use telling folks Linux is worthless
because they will find you are lying eventually, instead Windows must
prove itself batter all the time.
