What are the basic differences between XP & Vista? All we do is surf the
web, email and download an occasional game. Norton AntiVirus is always on
and always up-to-date. .

My XP machine is dying big time & I can't figure out how to save it. It
won't recognize the System Recovery disk that came with the machine, but it
will recognize other CDs. That CD must be bent or whatever. The SPs are up
to date. I'm running Office XP and it is taking Word and Excel 7 or 8
seconds to load; it used to open in a snap. I installed the latest edition
of Firefox and loading web pages with it is taking too long. Most pages
should just snap open. I guessed we've been "phished" or whatever because
some of the ads I run into know that I live in Seattle. Our network
connection is DSL and we haven't made any changes of any consequence that I
know of to this machine in ages

I put SpyBot on it a week ago and twice when WinXP started, the Spybot
folder opened. Not the program but the folder. Go figure?

Thanks

There are many differences between XP & Vista and most will only become
obvious with usage.

I suggest that you download either the AVG or AVAST anti-virus programs.
Save the installation file to your hard drive, UNINSTALL Norton! Restart and
install either AVG or AVAST, http://free.grisoft.com or http://www.avast.com
Scan your system with the new anti-virus.

Perform DiscCleanup (Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk
Cleanup)
Defragment your drives (Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk
Defragmenter)

These are minimal to restore your system.

That doesn't mean anything. Your connection ID is available to every web
site you visit. I can tell that you live in Seattle by the info contained
in your post here. Jesus even your IP address is listed!

If the recovery disk that came with your computer is not recognized, it may
be dirty or damaged.
If cleaning doen't fix it, you can usually order a replacement disk from the
computer's manufacturer.
I would run a good spyware program and antivirus on your computer,
Most of the time, such scans are more effective in safe mode.
I like Spybot Search & Destroy, which is free.
With XP, Windows Defender is also free.
For free antivirus, I like Avast, AVG or even Clamwin.
I think you can get any/all of them from the links at

Have you checked how much space is left on your C: drive? Sorry if this is a
simplistic question, but that was the problem with my old XP unit; it had a
small C: drive and that was loaded to the gills. With all of the updates,
upgrades, and such the older smaller drives get clogged up fast. I thought
that my original 80 gig drive -- which seemed huge when I first got it,
especially as I had a 200 gig RAID 1 system to save my data on -- would be
ample. Imagine my shock when I checked 'properties' to find I had less than
a gig left of that 80. Yep, my system got pretty slow.

After deleting some unneeded older programs, I still didn't have much drive
space. So I bought a new Vista machine, and have the XP as a backup unit on
a wireless network, along with my husband's laptop.

Not a simplistic question at all. Free space 123 GB, used 25.8 GB. I don't
know what to look for re: memory usage and capacity. Or anything else.
Thanks

Biggest different for a home user is Security and reading your status of XP
machine I think you could benefit a great deal to use Vista.
Don't do the common Misstake to buy Vista and install it on your old Windows
XP machine, you need probably better ahrdware.
Buy a new machien with Vista preinstalled (OEM) and you will be a lot more
safe from malware that now has taken over your XP machine.

Vista comes in many different versions, so unless you let us now what you
want to do I cannot suggest a version for you.

In general for companies Vista is a huge advantage, deployment, security and
stability are improved.

If you want help to clean your XP machine I suggest you post in an XP
newsgroup

I agree !

If one is getting a new machine that comes with Vista I am sure it will be
fine.
Most of the problems with Vista have been due to folks trying to "upgrade" a
machine that just plain does not
have the hardware to run Vista properly.

Even though Vista has better security...A virus checker is still required!
