Vista pc cannot logon to domain

I have Windows Vista Home Basic and I have no option to logon on my domain.
I want it to be a member of the domain. My servers run Windows 2003 R2
Standard SP2

Any thoughts

Should I upgrade to Business instead?

Hello Thomas,

Then you have to buy another Vista version. The Home version is not able
to join a domain, only business, ultimate or enterprise.

In addition to Meinolf's post, you cannot "upgrade" the operating system
from Home to Business, Enterprise or Ultimate. It would require a
re-install.

In any case, money spent on Vista now would be money down the drain. Wait a
few days for the official Windows 7 release, and get a decent OS.

If you want to map shares meantime, MyLogon will do that for you. (You need
to turn off UAE whilst installing, next version will overcome this but for
now it needs a little manual configuring on Vista/7)

I wouldn't say money down the drain. What happens in a scenario where a
company has devoted time to testing and validating Vista with their apps and
other business solutions? Do they just dump it because a new OS is out? They
will need to test and validate the new RTM version of the OS before simply
dumping Vista, or XP for that matter. I would think the same with using a
third party solution, such as MyLogon. In small scenarios I can see it may
not be a big issue, but nonetheless, testing is required.

If they're using Vista on other computers, I agree. Although they way I read
the OP, this is the first Vista computer on the LAN, presumably others are
XP.

The other issue here is that Vista/7 profiles are not interchangeable with
XP profiles. Thus, a mix of the two on a domain is problematic, especially if
roaming profiles are used, or users change seats. Upgrading to Business won't
help this either.

Thus, perhaps my suggestion of waiting for 7 should be qualified by the fact
that this would not be so suitable if profiles must be interchangeable with
XP desktops.

Though, if the full set of domain features are not necessary then MyLogon
offers a very simple solution to getting the Home computer onto the LAN, at
no extra cost.

I didn't realize MyLogon offers a solution to incorporate a Home version
onto a domain. Thanks for pointing that out and should be a good solution
for the OP.

I agree profiles are not interchangeable if using Roaming Profiles. I think
the trend is to move away from profiles and use redirection, which is a
better suited solution and interoperates much better between XP/Vista and 7.
There are some differences, but not too much that would affect not using
them.
